Michael Vitale Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 7, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Michael Vitale. At 66 years old, he left us too soon on March 23, 2025 in Spokane, Washington. A free spirit and a true outdoorsman, Mike found joy in the simple things - fishing at his favorite spot, camping under the stars, and strumming his guitar with the kind of soul only a self-taught musician could. The Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna were his soundtrack and his trusty blue GMC Vandura van carried him on countless adventures.

Mike was a proud Master plumber by trade, dedicating over 50 years to his craft before retiring two years ago. He worked hard, with steady hands and a no-nonsense approach, always willing to help his family and friends.

He was often torn between his love of the rugged beauty on the West Coast and his deep connection to his family back East. One of his favorite things was gathering friends and family to see Hot Tuna play live, sharing the music he loved with the people he cared about most. His favorite show was at the Beacon theatre, a memory he cherished.

Mike had a great connection to family and friends back East, always making time for the people who mattered most. Whether it was hunting for treasures at estate sales, sharing a hot slice of pizza or a perfect Jersey bagel, or just sitting back with a Yuengling or a cup of coffee, he embraced every moment. He always appreciated a good ghost story on TV, a Nascar race, a mystery to ponder, and of course, Bigfoot was always out there somewhere.

He is survived by his brothers Neil (wife Marilyn) and John (wife Dawn); his sisters MaryLynn (husband John) and Alyssa (husband Nils); and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews who adored him. He is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Joanne, and his brothers Anthony Jr. and Jimmy.

A man of loyalty, humor and a fiercely independent spirit, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May he forever rest in peace, somewhere by campfire, guitar in hand, with the stars above and good company around him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the American Legion in Stanhope, NJ on Sunday, April 27 from 2-6 pm, a place where Mike frequented when he visited New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, please raise toast in his honor, share a story, and keep his spirit alive in the things he loved.

My family and I shared many childhood memories with Mike and his family. I babysat him often growing up on Highland Avenue in Stanhope NJ. He was a quiet, sweet and handsome young man. I am pleased to know he had a happy life. My fond memories of the Vitale family remain very special. Jacki Kemmerer

Thank you for being such a good friend, Mike. I´ll cherish those memories of walking through the woods with you, teaching me about the different flowers and trees. I´ll never forget the many shows we went to and the Beacon being my favorite as well. Until we meet again...love always, Janice
