Michael Walsh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 8, 2025.
Michael John "Mike" Walsh, 76, passed away after a sudden illness on May 2, 2025, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the city where he was born and spent much of his life.

Born on March 7, 1949, in Portsmouth, Mike began his education at St. Patrick's School and earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout in 1963. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover in 1967, where he was a Running Back for the football team. Shortly after, he attended the U.S. Naval Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, before embarking on a distinguished journey with the United States Navy.

In 1968, Mike joined the Navy as a CS3 aboard the EX-DYESS, a World War II-era destroyer that ventured into the Black Sea during the Vietnam War era. His service took him across the globe, with some of his fondest memories rooted in travels through the Greek Isles and along Italy's Amalfi Coast. After active duty, Mike continued to serve as a reservist and shared captivating stories of his naval adventures with family and friends.

Following his military service, Mike pursued a career in the culinary world, working as a cook in several restaurants. In 1983, he transitioned to a role at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in New Hampshire, where he served as a Security Supervisor until 2003. That year marked another meaningful chapter when Mike joined the City of Portsmouth's Public Works Department. Over more than two decades, he built lasting friendships with many who became like family.

Mike was a voracious reader known for finishing an 800-page book in a single day, he was always ready with a thoughtful recommendation or insight into history, one of his favorite subjects. He had an enduring love for sports cars and owned more over the years than most could count. Camping trips through New England were cherished pastimes, especially along the Kancamagus Highway, affectionately referred to by Mike as "the Kanc." He also delighted in cross-country road trips and exploring historical landmarks across the United States.

Family was at the heart of everything Mike did. He is survived by his children: Michelle Mather (Andrew) of York, Maine; Jon Walsh of Milton, New Hampshire; Jillian Walsh (Nathan Goodwin) of Rochester, New Hampshire; and Matthew Walsh of Milton, New Hampshire. Mike was a proud grandparent to Morgan and Jordan Kroitzsh of Portsmouth; Jayce and Jaxson Goodwin of Rochester; and bonus grandchildren Brendan and Madeline Mather of York; Trevor, David, and Cameron Goodwin of Rochester, New Hampshire, and many loving nieces and nephews across the country.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Walsh of Portsmouth, with whom he shared a home; brother Stephen Walsh of Laconia; and Karen Tam of Benbrook, Texas. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Betton) Walsh and John Walsh.

Mike found immense joy in cooking with his grandchildren and spending time surrounded by loved ones. His quick wit and humor made every gathering more memorable, whether through a well-timed joke or an amusing story from his travels or his youth.

Mike's legacy is one of adventure, laughter, dedication to service, and deep familial love. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. Visitation will begin on May 12, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a short memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A Burial will be held on May 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at Calvary Cemetery 990 Middle Road, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Sending all my love and condolences to Mike's siblings - Mary, Steve & Karen, and his children - Michelle, Jon, Jillian & Matt, along with the rest of the family and his friends. You were one of a kind Uncle Mike, a great listener and storyteller, so kind, laid back and welcoming to all. I hope to travel like you did - road trips are the best! I will think of you always and forever during these trips and I hope you'll be watching over me - Lord knows I need as many angels as I can get while I'm out there on the road (little bit of a lead foot, shhh ). RIP Love, Kelly

Mike was one of a kind! Working odd hours with Walsh allowed me to spend much time chatting, discussing all sorts and kinds of things plus laughing a lot. His old "sayings" were a muse to me. I asked once; How are you? He goes: You know, I'm like a one legged man: I can't kick! Haha All his stories of old time and recent camping trips with family and making pancakes over a campfire with his granddaughters made him so proud and brought a smile to his face. Stopping by to visit him, Mary and Laney, gave me the chance to get to know him in a different context and I can smile and say I could call him a friend! May he rest in peace and may all his memories continue to be treasured and his adventures spread. He will be missed!
