Mr. Young was a one of a kind educator and I feel lucky to be one of the many lives he touched as a student at Markham. His legacy will live on.

This man was the reason I became a teacher. He was there for me when I needed him most. I forced my parents to allow me to invite him and his wife to dinner at our house. And I'll never forget the most amazing science lesson we had where we formed our own rock band to perform Smoke on the Water. He was the original school of rocker. I am incredibly saddened to hear of his passing, and even more upset I missed this and didn't get the chance to say goodbye. He will never be forgotten. My prayers to his family who already know how lucky they were to have him in their lives.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Spike's passing. Though I hadn't seen him in years, I'll always find a smile and laugh at the great time we had playing hockey at the Bridgeville ice rink, driving around in his infamous Blue Dodge Dart listening to Ted Nugent and Led Zeppelin on the 8-track player, and having a bunch of other fun throughout school at St. Basil's and Carrick High. Mary Pat and I pray that God's blessings be with your family. You will always be fondly remembered. Rest in peace old friend.

All three of my daughters were students of Mike's at Markham. He was a beloved teacher then, and remains a favorite in the hearts of all three. He was a favorite of mine as well. His passing has made us so sad. He was a treasure to our district and has been sorely missed since his retirement. RIP, Mike.

I've been avoiding commenting on this...simply because I cannot nor do I want to face the fact that this is real.
I just brought Mr. Young up a month ago at an in-service meeting. We were asked about teachers who shaped our lives, inspired us, believed in us, and loved us. Mr. Young, you did all of these things for so many young people--thank you. And neither education nor this world will be quite the same without you.
My heart and prayers go out to the Young family. I am so very sorry for your loss.

There are few things I remember better about elementary school (or really school in general) than fifth grade science. From Mr. Young making up songs on his guitar, to creating ooblick, to wiring our own small houses with switches and lightbulbs, to testing and making aerodynamic race cars, Mr. Young did STEM before it was cool. He was an incredible teacher who inspired and touched many lives (including my own). As an educator, I strive to be more like him daily. My prayers and thoughts are with the Young family during this time.

My deepest sympathy and condolences for Mr. Young's family and friends. He was an exemplary teacher who made learning not only memorable and fun but something to look forward to. I can still remember many of his hands on lessons. Raising waterfowl, marshmallow wars, songs, and being pelted with candy come to mind first. He had a large impact on my interest in science which lead to my career in wildlife biology. I am extremely thankful to have known him. He will be greatly missed.

I was in fifth grade the year Mr. Young won one of his awards. He donated the prize money back to the school and took our whole grade on a trip to Gettysburg. It is only as an adult that I can see how kind and generous that act and this man were! Thank you Mr. Young, and my condolences to his family.

My sympathy and prayers for Mike's family. Mike was an incredibly innovative teacher.
I'm not sure there was ever a student in
his class that left that year without wonderful memories, a love of science and
a different way of looking at their fifth
grade lives. He was a great friend to my
son, Christian, and our family as he was
to all that were lucky enough to share their
lives with him. There's a special place in
heaven for Mike. He will live in our hearts
forever.

Mr. Young - You were truly one of a kind. The creativity that went into your teaching was extraordinary. We all learned so much from you, even when we thought we were merely listening to a fun song that you wrote. Thank you for everything. You will surely be missed...

One of the most amazingly gifted teachers our children have ever had. He showed us all that learning could happen in many ways. I think every student who ever left his classroom proclaimed science to be their favorite subject. Prayers for peace and treasured memories for all who knew and loved him.

One of the most wonderful science teachers at Markham elementary school. Very kind and loved his students, made learning fun. My son RJ had him in 5th grade. Sending our family's sincerest condolences for your loss. I'll never forget "Bovine Wines". And our visit to his vineyard several years ago. Happier times.

A silly, fun-loving, inspirational teacher. From playing your guitar in class and making up songs about everyone to letting us raise a literal farm in your classroom, you truly let us do anything to learn. You opened my eyes to the excitement of science and I am now pursuing a career in the medical field. You are still a common name in our household, rest easy.
