Michelle Fong Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2023.
Michelle "Michey" DeVita Fong, 63, passed away on May 22, 2023 in Sacramento, CA.

Michelle is survived by her husband Arthur "Art" Fong Jr. and son Arthur "Artie" Muir Fong III. Beloved sister of Maria, Anthony "Tony", and Jean. Caring niece, cousin, and in-law to her extended family. Precious Auntie Shell to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Michelle was born in Westchester, IL on February 6, 1960 to Frank DeVita and Blanche Gilbert. In 1979, she bought a one-way Greyhound ticket to California. As the bus came down from the Sierra foothills, she saw the Sacramento valley and knew she found her home. There, she met her future hunky hubby and married him on October 20, 1990. Three years later, she gave birth to her beautiful and bright sun.

For more than 30 years, Michelle successfully grew her career working for the State of California. She spent the majority of her years at CalPERS while getting into fun shenanigans with her wonderful colleagues and now friends before retiring in 2016.

Michelle was the light of life (Lucia DeVita) and mother to many - including the daughters of her heart Nhi Vo and Shaomay Vong. She enjoyed relaxing summers in the sun "doing yard work" with the family by the pool. She is a cat lover who nurtured many cats over the years. She celebrated movement and spirituality at 5Rhythms Dance for many years. She channeled her creativity into mixed media art including stitchwork, journaling, painting, sketching, and collage using all the scraps she came across in her journey through life. She found joy and peace in her art studio where the magic was strongest as she created pieces of art reflecting her soul and true self. Open one of her many journals to discover the feelings and moments she captured in the variety of materials and colors melded together on the pages. A poet, you can find her thoughts and emotions scribbled into artistic stanzas and creative flow on the tapestry of her life.

Michelle welcomed each morning with breakfast and a cup of coffee - oat milk flat white being her favorite. She would not tell you what you wanted to hear but what you needed to hear. She brought solace to those around her who sought it. Just as she received from her own mother, she opened herself and shared her love and light freely to those who accepted it. A vibrant sparkle, Michelina's warmth and energy will be with us forever.

Join us as we celebrate the life of Michelle through artwork and dance. The celebration of life will be an open art gallery where family and friends can drop by anytime between 1:00-3:30 pm to view her artwork and take home any unclaimed pieces that speak to them. Light snacks and beverages will be available.

Additionally, if you care to dance to honor her vibrant memory, join 5Rhythms Sacramento on the dance floor from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. You are welcome to bring anything you might wish to contribute to the altar such as photos, writing, or artwork - whatever evokes the spirit of Michey.

Michelle's Celebration of Life: art gallery and gathering from 1:00-3:30 pm on Sunday, July 2, 2023 with words of appreciation at 2:00 pm at The Auditorium at CLARA (1425 24th Street; Sacramento, CA 95816). Optional dance from 10:00 am-12:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the following organizations Michelle supported: Until There's a Cure and Sacramento Broad Room Creative Collective.

While I can't be there in person, I will be celebrating Michey's life here on Maui. Michelle was my first dance friend, welcoming me into the "tribe" and changing my life, on an (extra)ordinary Wednesday night in a Sacramento community center. Years of dance, workshops, art, book group, pool parties, grief processing, laughter and more followed. You will always sparkle in my heart dear Michey.

It has been many years since we've seen Michelle, but we have treasured memories of going to Giant's games with her, Art and Artie. We always enjoyed Michelle's enthusiasm, kindness, confidence and sense of fun. Our love and condolences to Art and Artie.

Michey, my fairy-dancing-scarf-twirling, artistic sister- I am still in denial that you are no longer on this earth with your smile, your wisdom, your playfulness. I can still hear your voice, your whisper, your laughter, your concern. You inspired me to dance in the rain, wear sparkles, and play. You encouraged me to rip paper and glue jewels to canvas, and journal when I was stuck. I weep with missing you as memories swirl. I LOVE YOU FOREVER MY FRIEND.

Dearest Michelle, You were such a kind soul & beloved friend. I will miss our art adventures, long phone calls, gardening tips, and viewing your beautiful artwork, journals, & stitching projects. You made my life better and I will cherish our time together.

I met Michey at ADP over 30 years ago. We´ve been friends ever since. I love her like a Sister. She was such a special person and my heart is broken. I will truly miss our inside jokes and the memes and reels we would send each other on IG. She had her own style and didn´t care what others thought, and that´s what I loved most about her. Miss you Sis. I know Olive will be happy to see you but I´m gonna miss you like crazy! Go dance with the angels

Still having trouble believing this is true. Michelle was such a bright light. Loved her from the moment I met her. We didn´t see each other often these last few years, but checked in on each other often. I will miss her sense of adventure and sense of humor. We had some great laughs together, and I will truly treasure those memories. Sending love to HH Art and Artie. Di Richardson
