Mickey Woodson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2015.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Mickey Sutphin Woodson, 71, passed away on Friday October 30th, 2015 after a long illness. Mickey was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina on August 18th, 1944. She was a long time resident of the Virginia peninsula since 1962. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Known to her grandchildren and then children as "Mama", she was an avid gardener and homemaker, and steadfastly involved in all of her grandchildren's many activities. From dance competitions, to soccer tournaments, music recitals and softball games, "Mama" was always counted on to be there and to be a driving force behind all of her grandchildren. Her home and her yard were the places that she worked so hard to have her family gather to share in each other's lives and that will live on through her devoted husband and children. Mickey is preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Elsie Sutphin and her sister Betty Lou Stover. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Wayne E. Woodson, her daughter, Patsy W. Gillespie and her husband John of Newport News, her son, John W Woodson and his wife Karen of Chesapeake, her brother Buddy Sutphin of Hickory, North Carolina, her grandchildren, Brian Christopher Gillespie, Karly Ann Gillespie, Cory Joseph Gillespie, Ann Jacob Woodson, Caroline Gladden Woodson and Mary Katherine Woodson and 2 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday November 3rd, 2015 at the Peninsula Funeral Home. The visitation will be followed by a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park conducted by Reverend Tammy L. Estep. A lunch reception will take place at the home of Patsy and John Gillespie following the graveside service. Arrangements are by Peninsula Funeral Home.

Wayne and family, so sorry for your loss. We were neighbors in the 60's,lived on Cellardoor Ct. We still remember the great time we had with you and Mickey at the race in Darlington. We regret we lost contact, but as we have families and our lives take different paths at least we still have memories.

Dear Wayne, Patsy and John, I am very sorry for your loss. Mickey always had a radiant smile. It was so automatic every time you would see her. She was so gifted at every thing she did. Her garden, home decorating, creating in the kitchen, as a tennis player. I believe her grandchildren gave her the most joy.

The picture you have chosen truly reflects how beautiful she was inside and out. May God comfort you and all your family.

Mickey was a fan of McDonald Garden Center even before I arrived in 1973. She has always been a delight to serve. Her style has always been charming and friendly. This won her the friendship of all of the folks at the garden center. We will always cherish the special relationship we shared.

Wayne and Family

My deepest condolences to each and all of you. As one of Wayne's co-workers, I didn't personally know Mickey. But I know that the few times Wayne mentioned Mickey, it was with a voice full of love and brightness. I could tell Mickey was a special, wonderful person just from the light in Wayne's voice when he mentioned her.

Again, my condolences and prayers to all of you in your time of mourning.

We Loved Mickey and Family.
A one of a kind neighbor and friend. She will be remembered in many ways, including calls to "Open the Garage Door". And Her:

Complete Love and Pride of Husband and Family; Contagious Smile; Immaculate lawn, plants, flowers; Friendly welcome "How Are You"; Amazing memory; Love of McDonalds Nursery and WaWa; and Thoughtfulness and Caring for many neighbors and friends.

What a True Southern Lady.

So sad to learn of Mickey's passing. I will miss talking about our gardening successes and failures with her. She always kept a watchful eye on my yard and now she'll continue to do so from a higher elevation. My prayers to each of her beloved family members.

My condolences to one of my best friends "Woody" in the loss of his mom. My sympathies to the Woodson family. I guess I could share the story how I often appeared just a little too early in the morning to get John to hang out, and it would irritate her a bit. In later years we talked and laughed about that.

Mickey will always be one of the kindest people I have ever known. I will carry forever the memories of Christmas breakfast at her house, garden and cooking tips she gave me, and the feeling of safety and peace and her and her husband Wayne brought to me as a child. I will miss her.
