Acie P. Smith Jr., 80, Madison, passed away at 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at The Waters of Clifty Falls, Madison.
Born March 11, 1933, in Owenton, Ky., he was the son of Asa Smith, Sr. and Mary New Smith. On July 11, 1957, in Columbus, he married Betty Jean Brown.
Acie was the loving son of the late Asa Smith Sr. and Mary New Smith. He was a graduate of Owenton High School in Owenton, Ky. The family moved to Commiskey in 1947 and to Madison in 1957.
He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force on June 24, 1952, in Indianapolis.
He rose to the rank of airman first class during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1956, at Parks Air Force Base in California.
He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed from 1959 to 1988 at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus.
After his retirement from Cummins, he began driving a truck for Kendrick Trucking in Hillview, Ky., from 1988-2011. He was a faithful member of Calvary Wesleyan Church in Madison. He was also a member of the Diesel Workers Union in Columbus.
He was a devoted husband, loving dad and grandpa.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 56 years, Betty Jean Brown Smith, Madison; two sons, Terry Smith and his companion, Brenda Swift, Louisville, and Jeff (Jessica) Smith, North Vernon; a daughter, Kim Briner, Madison; grandchildren, Naomi Briner, Amber Briner, Emily Briner, Rachel Briner, Kayla Smith, Kyle Smith and Jayden Smith; great-grandchildren, Adelia Briner and Henry Helms; a sister-in-law, Harriet Smith, Madison; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kirtley Smith, Elwood Lane Smith, James Smith and Noah Smith.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, with the Rev. Monty L. Mahoney officiating. Interment will be at Dupont Cemetery.
A final salute will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
The family requests memorials be made in memory of Acie to Calvary Wesleyan Church.
