Mike Perry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2024.
John Michael Perry (aka "Redbird" to his family & friends) passed away in Portland, Oregon in late March 2024. Mike lived 77 full years of life; the first 68 in the Indianapolis area & the last 9+ in Portland with his grandsons. He loved life; his family, his friends, his sports, & his job.

Born to Rosemary Renihan Perry & George Golden Perry; he joined older brother Steve (wife Sheila), sister Nancy, & younger brother Tim in a loving household in the Broad Ripple area. After attending Indiana University Mike met & married Kathy (Anderson), building a home life on the Northside of Indianapolis for the next 44 years. They welcomed their son Nick in 1978 enjoying years of fun & laughter. Later in life Mike's family grew again when Nick & his wife Joanna welcomed 2 boys (Jackson & Dylan) for Mike to play grandfather to, out in Portland Oregon.

Mike was gifted athletically from his little league days through football, basketball, & track at Broad Ripple High School. One of his proudest moments was being a part of the Big Ten Champions & Rose Bowl participant Indiana University football team. Later in life Mike turned his energy to golf where he was "lucky" enough to score a hole in 1 three different times through the years. He never cared as much about winning or losing as he did about enjoying the moment & the people he was there with.

Family, friends, & sports all set him up for his dream job as a financial advisor. He started at City Securities (now Stifel) & worked with investments for 53 years at essentially the same company with the same people. He loved his job, his customers, & his work friends.

Mike had so many friends from all areas of his life. From Broad Ripple High School, Indiana University, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, City Securities/Stifel, & Meridian Hills Country Club all these connections made his life very full. Thank you to all for that.

Mike struggled briefly with early onset Dementia/Alzheimers & passed peacefully in hospice March 28, 2024. Any donations in his memory should be sent to the Indiana University Athletics. Plans are being developed for a celebration of life gathering this summer in the Indianapolis area, friends & family please stay tuned for more info.

I knew Mike for many years through Meridian Hills Country Club. We played golf together several times. I have many Mike Perry stories, but my favorite that comes to mind is at Pebble Beach Golf Club in Carmel, California. The 18th hole at Pebble Brook is lined with the ocean all the way down the left side. I was waiting for him to re-tee his shot when I say a club helicoptering over my head and land in the ocean - it was his new driver.

Mike was a bit like another parent to me. Always gave solid advice and helped me look at things from every angle with solid open minded advice. I met him when I was 16 and he continued to be there for me for many many years and after both my parents passed his presence seemed to be even more important because he was such a GOOD SOLID HUMAN. Finding out of his passing has brought tears streaming down my cheeks.... I can still hear his voice in my head...giving me advice with a light heart even when times were bad or things were difficult. He always looked at the big picture and time and how things pass and there is a flow in life. He was a wise man...never doom and gloom! I Feel blessed that he was part of my life and my path and he was there to guide me when I needed guidance. RIP Mike .... You are Dearly Missed Already

My sincere Condolences to your Family,
Barbara Koch

Posting as a friend mostly of Mike's wife, Kathy. I mainly remember Mike as an outgoing. friendly, successful guy. He was crazy about his wife, loved going new places and enjoyed his work.
