Miki Okutani Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2025.
Miki Mary Blessington Okutani, born on June 16, 1948, in Tokyo, Japan, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She was the beloved daughter of Lawrence and Ko Takano Blessington, both deceased. She was a devoted sister to Margie Hines and Daniel Blessington.

Miki's greatest joy in life was her children, Manabu Okutani and Ryo Okutani. She loved them unconditionally, always ready to offer her support and encouragement. She was immensely proud of everything they did and referred to them as "her boys."

She was proud of her Japanese-Irish heritage but most proud of being an American and an Army brat. She loved and spoke with everyone, making connections wherever she went, effortlessly switching between English, French, and Japanese.

Miki led a diverse and fulfilling career. She worked as a school teacher in Pennsylvania, a librarian at UMASS Amherst, a laundromat owner in Connecticut, a computer programmer for IBM, an English teacher in Japan, and a substitute teacher in Springfield. In addition to her professional roles, she dedicated significant time and effort to the Family Readiness Group at Barnes Air National Guard Base, providing invaluable support to military families. She also volunteered as an English tutor at STCC, helping others with her knowledge and skills.

A devout Roman Catholic, Miki's faith was an integral part of her life. She was actively involved in her church, serving as a Eucharistic minister and Gospel reader. She found joy and purpose in her church community.

She had a deep appreciation for music, despite claiming she had a bad voice, and sang every song she knew. She was an avid reader, often finishing multiple books a week, with The Secret Garden as her favorite. Her favorite color was purple, a reflection of her vibrant spirit.

Miki had a playful love for technology, often referring to herself as nerdy due to her interest in gadgets. She also enjoyed the humor in life's absurdities. Feisty when it came to standing up for what was right, she was gentle and kind to all, especially children.

She cherished nature and loved taking walks, often accompanied by her beloved Springer Spaniel, Hope, and Yellow Lab, Tito. The bond they shared was immeasurable, and she loved them as deeply as she loved her family.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael's Cathedral on March 3 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association in her honor.

Miki will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved her.

Dear Max and Ryo, I just heard of your mom's passing. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Your mom was a rare and radiant jewel among us all. She gave so much of herself to everything she participated in. She is greatly missed by all who knew her and most of all by her boys. She raised you well. Much love and peace to you both as you move forward in this life with your mom watching over you from heaven. Blessings, from Betsy, (Jay and Phil's mom).
