Miriam Hogan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2012.
Miriam Grace Stuart Hogan

Miriam Grace Stuart Hogan slipped peacefully from this life on June 17, 2012, at her residence in New Braunfels, TX with her family at her side. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 18, 1919, to Effie Mae and William Louis Stuart, and was the younger of two children. She attended school in Little Rock and Fayetteville where she graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1940. On June 3, 1941, she married Charles W. Hogan, II, also of Little Rock, Arkansas.
In March of 1943, along with her sister, Miriam joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, WAAC, which later became the Women's Army Corps, WAC. She graduated from the Thirtieth Officer Candidate Class of the WAAC and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant. During her service in the WAC she was stationed mostly in Texas and New Mexico with duties that included office work and recruitment. She served in the WAC until her discharge in February of 1945. Her service in the Army was among her proudest accomplishments and she shared many memories of that time with her family and friends.
After WW II Miriam and husband, Charlie, settled in Camden, Arkansas where their family expanded from one to four children and where they met and enjoyed the company of many lifelong friends. In 1960, she and her family moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma where Miriam and Charlie started a roofing manufacturing business. In 1981, Miriam and Charlie retired to Lake Kiowa, Texas. In December of 2011, at the age of 92 she moved to New Braunfels, TX to be closer to family members.
Miriam was an avid golfer all of her adult life. She won many tournament trophies including twice winning the Dornick Hills Country Club Women's Championship in Ardmore. She had many friendships from the golf course in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and wherever she played the game. Miriam traveled extensively. She and Charlie traveled to many countries around the globe from above the Arctic Circle to Antarctica. She continued to visit new countries with family and friends after Charlie passed away in 1990. Miriam loved the Arts. Throughout her life she participated in and supported performing and visual arts. She and Charlie were particularly interested in Western and American Indian works of art and supported several museums in Oklahoma and Texas.
Miriam was predeceased by her husband Charles W. Hogan, II. Miriam is survived by her sister Mary Louise Graw of Santa Fe, NM; her son Charles W. Hogan, III and partner Jonathan I. Shiff of Providence, RI; her daughter Laura Louise Schneider and husband Joe B. Schneider of San Marcos, TX; her daughter Rebecca Mae Hogan of Weatherford, TX; her son William James Hogan and wife Gayle Cocke Hogan of San Antonio, TX; her granddaughter Emily Mae Schneider of Austin, TX; her grandson William Kenneth Hogan of Ardmore, OK; her granddaughter Virginia Elizabeth Hogan of Ada, OK; and many nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX where she will be buried with her husband. Memorials can be sent to CASA of North Texas, P. O. Box 615, Gainesville, TX 76241.

Tom and I would like to express our sympathy to the entire Hogan Family. I only met Miriam once but she left quite an impression. It was at Bill and Gayle wedding 2 1/2 years ago and she was seated at one of the reception tables. I smiled and thought................ what a grand and refined lady.

And one by one crept silently to rest."

Chuck, Laurie, Becky, and Bill –
I have such fond memories of your mother. She was always good company, and I felt so welcome in her home, where I probably spent an inordinate amount of time during the early and mid 60's. I really appreciated her acute sense of humor and ready laugh. She was always thoughtful, and was the first to reach out to our family when my mother passed away.
My grandmother and aunt were two of her golf buddies at Dornick Hills and they both treasured her friendship.
God be with you.

What a privilege it was to get to know Miriam Hogan after we moved to Gainesville, and what a woman she was! She will be missed in Lake Kiowa, for sure, but for those of us "outside the gates", she was inspiring - from her stoic fortitude with health issues, to her awesome knowledge of art, and to some, her appreciation for a good single malt. What a lady! May she rest in peace -

I always loved Aunt M.G.! She & Uncle Charlie took me around London to the museums and Harrods in 1978. That trip and all the other family get-togethers bring a smile of rememberance. She will be missed. Linda McKinney & family

For Miriam's Family.
I shall never forget what a special lady you had in your Mom.
Several years ago, we were doing presentations on all the states at the Kiowa Woman's Club meeting. I asked Miriram if she would represent Arkansas. At the meeting she stood tall with all her dignity and in her loudest voice let out WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Pig, Sooie!
I shall never forgot her "performance".

Don and I want to say what a privilege it has been to know Miriam over the years. She and Uncle Charlie were our fun, generous, always excited to visit relatives. On one of our last visits she took time to bake us a cake even though she was on crutches. What a gracious hostess! We are so glad we brought my Dad out to Texas for her 90th birthday party. What a grand time. She will be missed. Our prayers go out to Chuck, Laura, Becky, and Bill.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. I so enjoyed visiting via phone each week with Miriam. I would call her just to say hello and see how she was feeling. I started doing that when I first became St. Paul's Church Secretary about five years ago and I felt like I got to know her over that period of time as a very gracious, pleasant, person and we had many fine discussions of her life . I for one will miss her but know she is now in heaven with our heavenly Father and void of all pain. Norma Leslie, St. Paul's Episcopal Church Secretary.

Laura and Bill,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. I feel truely blessed being able to have taken care of your mom these last months and lucky to have met her.
