Mollie MESSINA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 9, 2010.
MESSINA, Mollie Sicignano Mollie Sicignano Messina, 93, formerly of Hillside Avenue in Seymour, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning (June 8, 2010) at The Summit of Plantsville in Plantsville. She was predeceased by her husband Santo "Jim" Messina in 1988. Mrs. Messina was born in Derby on October 12, 1916, daughter of the late Catello and Anna Ferrara Sicignano. A lifelong Valley resident, she worked along with her husband in their business, the former Belmont Camera & Photography Shop in Ansonia. She was also employed at the former US Rubber in Naugatuck and Electrolux in Seymour. Mollie was happiest when surrounded by family and her many friends and welcomed them often for dinners and gatherings. Mollie enjoyed parties, dancing, playing cards and poker, and her yearly trips to the Saratoga Race Track with her sisters. She crocheted numerous afghans and gifted them to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren which they cherish as a loving memory. She is survived by a son, James B. (Peggy) Messina of Naples, FL, 3 daughters, Judith (Thomas) Ortel of Clifton Park, NY, Carolyn (Don) Cormier of Hickory, NC, and Patricia (Jay) Bostwick of Southington, a brother, Nicholas (Josephine) Tangredi of North Haven, a sister, Victoria Richards of East Haven, seven grandchildren, Dan (Yvonne) Ortel of Waxhaw, NC, Doug (Ann) Ortel of Urbana, MD, Jennifer (David) MacPhee of Loudonville, NY, Lisa Messina of Derby, Jodi (Eric) Daly of Naples, FL, Erin Lyman of Wallingford, and Joseph Cormier of Hickory, NC. Mollie was lovingly called "GiGi" by seven great-grandchildren, Brendan and Jillian MacPhee, and Christopher, Sarah, Stephen, Matthew, and Megan Ortel. She also leaves many cousins, devoted nieces and nephews, numerous close friends and longtime neighbors, especially the Coppola family, who called her "Aunt Mollie", and whom she considered part of her family. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by brothers, Tony, Carmen, and Joseph Sicignano and sisters, Rose Campanelli, Mary Alea, and Lillian Fappiano. Friends and relatives are invited to attend her funeral on Monday (July 12, 2010) at 9:15am from the Spinelli-Ricciuti Funeral Home, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia, followed by a memorial mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at the Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Inurnment will immediately follow in the family plot in Mt. St. Peters Cemetery in Derby. Visiting hours and a celebration of Mollie's life will be held on Sunday (July 11, 2010) from 3-6 p.m. in the chapel of the Spinelli-Ricciuti Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 279 New Britain Road, Suite 5, Kensington, CT 06037. Dear Family, Aunt Mollie will always be remembered for her spunk and fun loving ways. She is an integral part of my childhood memories. She was an Aunt that was so present in our lives. Her chicken soup and other meals she invited us to was a constant. She loved to cook and be with her family. A good game of Queen of Spades always added to the entertainment accompanied by, "Oh sure, you got the Q. of Spades again" or the famous "pretty good". We all loved Aunt Mollie and her giving ways and she will always be remembered with love and graditude that she shared her life with us. She leaves us all a positive legacy. May Aunt Mollie rest in Peace. Sincerely, Corinne & Brud

We are sorry to hear of Mollie's passing. We know she was dearly loved by all your family, and will be truly missed. Brian and I were very fortunate to have spent some time with Mollie when Megan Ortel was born. I know you will all have wonderful memories to share when you gather as a family in July.

From Mollie

TO THOSE I LOVE

If I should ever leave you

whom I love

To go along the Silent Way,

grieve not,

Nor speak of me with tears,

but laugh and talk

Of me as if I were

beside you there.

And when you hear a song

or see a bird

I loved, please do not let

the thought of me

Be sad ... For I am

loving you just as

I always have ...

You were so good to me!

There are so many things

I wanted still

To do ~ so many things

to say to you ...

Remember that I

did not fear ... It was

Just leaving you

that was so hard to face ...

We cannot see Beyond ...

But this I know:

I loved you so ~ ‘twas heaven

here with you!

We had the great joy of knowing Mollie when she came to visit Don and Carol Cormier in Hickory, NC. We spent many an hour at the kitchen table, sharing wine, good stories, and even a few lies. I believe that these memories will keep Mollie's joy alive in all of us. Our deepest sympathy is with the family, and we especially think of Joey. We have the great joy of having one of Mollie's wonderful crochet afghans and it will be in our home and hearts forever. Love, Martha, Glenn, Marcus and Sara DeBiasi

I will miss my dear Godmother. So many memories... summers at the beach... all our holidays together when I was younger... all the Pasta Day's together when I got older... the sisters loving and bickering as only sisters could... her generous spirit... her constant, unconditional love... her artichokes... :) I will miss her deeply. Aunt Molly please give my godfather and my mom and dad and sis hugs for us.
