I realize that this post/comment/endearment is eight years too late, however, Frau Malone has been on my mind and in my heart a lot as of late. I recently lost my own mother, so I´d like to begin by offering my condolences however, late to her children and family. Frau Malone touched my life in such a way that I barely have words to describe. I remember when I took her class back in 2000 whatever lol, I was unsure of myself and in my ability to learn a new language. I purchased the book and did not open it, for fear that I would not be able to return it. But I´ll tell you, after the first class with her, I could recite the alphabet in german, count to 100 and I had learned everyday phrases! From the first class! I was already a parent myself when I took her course and I was a bit embarrassed to be as old as I was, and in the situation that I was attending school. Frau Malone was no nonsense, fair and genuine. We used to meet at Das Waldcafe, when she was giving me extra instruction. She knew before I did that I had the ability to be great with language. Not only was she reassuring, she was genuinely interested in me as a person and not just me but my family as well. These meetings were after work hours, her own time. She encouraged me to grow and change and to think outside of my box. I took her for three years, the third year I could only audit the course with no grade or credits, as you are not able to take the same language teacher for three years in a row. I was already at Old Dominion university still going to Thomas Nelson to take this class with her. She was amazing. And oh so strong. The last time we spoke, I reached out to her after I had heard what happened to her husband when he went to early vote. And although she obviously was going through a painful time, she still redirected the conversation onto my life and what my children were up to.

And now that I´m a teacher and I´ve faced the things that I´ve faced in this life, I remember the lessons that she taught me and I am better for it. Thank you Frau Malone.

Thank you to everyone below for your tributes. We were not aware that messages had been left and apologise for the very long delay in acknowledging your tributes. Our mother and father had a long life in Hampton and our mother was at her happiest there teaching, spending time with old friends and making new friends in all her different interests and pursuits. With warmest regards, Ingrid, Susan, Victor and Michael

Ich liebe dich, meine geliebte Lehrerin.

To the family of my dear Frau Malone,
My heart is broken to discover the passing of your beautiful mother. I just found out that she died, because I have been searching for her to get together with her, for a long time. I didn't know where she was and couldn't find her...until now, only it's too late. I have been crying all morning since I read this!!

I graduated from TNCC in 2007. Frau Malone was by far my best professor ever! I took two semesters of her German class, and she made me want to learn so much, that I was always doing extra projects and all the extra credit; even though I didn't need it for my grades! Not only was she a great teacher, she was so sweet and so kind. I rescued a turtle that had been attacked by a dog, and she welcomed him to come to class with me regularly. (He sat on my shoulder observing the German lessons.) When my car was broken into and I had some things stolen, she gave me some of her own things to try to replace them. She had me over for dinners in her home. I used to go to the meetings that Mr. Malone had for the Fort Monroe National Park organization, and I gave everyone I knew the bumper stickers, to help save Ft. Monroe! (My family still has a lot of them displayed!) When I graduated, she was so proud of me that she made a special day with me to go to the Hampton Coliseum to take graduation photos with me. I was so touched....imagine all the students that she had graduate, yet she cared about my specific graduation!! I am crying even harder as I write this. I can't believe she's gone, and I didn't get to see her again. I already missed her, but now I will miss her for the rest of my life!!

Frau Malone, please know how much you've always meant to me. I am so very sad and sorry that I didn't get to see you again. Please know how much I appreciate you. You mean more to me than I can ever say! I pray to God that you know this! I will never, ever forget you, and I will love you to my dying day.

Family, please know that I am thinking of all of you, and I am so sorry for your great loss. I will be praying for you.

PS--if you have any access to her pictures, please let me know if you find any from May/June 2007, of her and I at the Coliseum. The memory card on my camera failed, and I was never able to print those photos. :-(. But Mr Malone took some as well, on their camera. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Melody J. Gardner

Dear Malone Family,

So sorry to hear of the loss of your Mother. Al and I just this past week wondered how she was doing and wished we had an address for her.

As Jeri Madsen mentioned, we had many HAPPY TIMES with your Mom and Dad at the ultralight field in Mathews. Also, remember you and your children being there too.
The last time we talked, which is several years now, she was happy being close to you all in Wisconsin.

so sorry for your loss.

Oh, how I remember Monika. I first met her in 1986 when I arrived at Hampton High. We formed a friendship around memories and language. I studied German in college and lived in Germany for 2 yrs. My German was a bit rusty but soon with our conversations it returned, and we had fun speaking in German at an English speaking high school. Interesting combination for me as the English teacher and my German friend. I left HHS but Monika and I reconnected at TNCC. Thus our language conversations continued. I looked forward to all the times we had together most of the time it was just a meeting up like once on a street shopping in the city. She will remain in my mind and heart as a life long wonderful friend. I know in death their is deep grief and a strong sense of loss, though Monika is always with those of us who hold her memory. My prayers and best to all of you.
