Mrs. Casanna Spiegner, age 94, of Birmingham, Alabama went to heaven on December 7, 2021. She was born in Birmingham and was one of eleven children born to the late Elbert and Winnie Upshaw. She was educated in Birmingham and graduated from Parker High School and was a longtime member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
Casanna was known for her independence, quick wit, and enthusiastic sense of humor….she never met a stranger. Always known as an expert seamstress, “Cat” as she was fondly called, was always the “go to” for family and friends, when something needed mending, altered or custom made. Her fancy clothes were never without matching shoes, bag, and hat! Her grandchildren appreciated the dumplings, homemade yeast rolls and that cornbread dressing. She will be missed.
Preceded in death by her loving husband Willie F. Spiegner, eight sisters, Sanganella Steward, Frankie Walker Kelly, Gertrude Brady, Ethel Cunningham, Georgia Snoddy, Bertha Upshaw, Mary Upshaw, and Lula Jones: two brothers Willie “Jim” Upshaw and Monroe “Bro” Upshaw.
She leaves to cherish loving memories: Daughters, Patricia Conner Evans, Birmingham and Roslyn Spiegner Jones, Birmingham. Grandsons: Reynard Evans (Demeria), Bessemer, Quinton Evans (Deborah), McCalla. Great grandchildren: Renesha Evans, Birmingham, David Evans, Birmingham, Zoe Evans, Bessemer, Sydney Evans, Mcalla. Great great grandson: Jeremiah Johnson, Birmingham. Special nieces, Terry Snoddy, Belinda Snoddy, Brelinda Snoddy, Janice Crittenden Janet McMillian and Geraldine Walker. Special friends: Marilyn Johnson, Alexis Lee, and Louvenia Wilkerson; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The service will be held at Roberts Funeral Services, 1337 Bessemer Road, Birmingham, AL 35208 on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at Noon with interment at Carver Memorial Gardens. The visitation will be from 4pm to 6pm on Monday, December 13, 2021.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jessie’s Place for Women and Children - https://jessiesplace.com/ at 2305 5th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203.

When I lived with my Mother and Aunt Lump, as we affectionately called her, would call I spoke with her regularly. Then when I moved to my own home, I called her every Saturday to check on her. She would say since I was by myself she called to check on me. I will miss our phone calls and the laughs we shared. Eternal Rest to our beloved Aunt Lump.

To Pat and the rest of the family, I just can't find the words to express my heartfelt prayers and sympathy at the time of your loss. Miss Cassanna was always special to me as I grew up in Macedonia. She was always positive and very well dressed. I know I will miss her and so will many others. Be safe and I am praying for you all.
