MSG. Skeim Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 14 to May 15, 2021.
MSG. Jerome Michael Skeim passed into eternal life on April 8, 2021 from complications from Covid-19 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born on May 5, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and then adopted by Jerome Ira Miles Skeim and Valborg Skeim.

Loving mate and devoted husband to Deborah Boisvert-Skeim. Loving father to five adult children Vicki Skeim in Minnesota, Joann Skeim-True in Wyoming, Michael Skeim in Minnesota, Joseph Boisvert in Maryland, and Elizabeth Boisvert in Maryland. A devoted and loving grandfather to Lily, Morgan and Meynard Boisvert.

Jerome joined the Army in the Vietnam era. He was an accomplished singer and an elite Army Glee club touring Europe extensively and attending head of state political functions. Adding his voice of peace and patriotism to these functions. He exited the army to attend Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota attaining a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications and History. He was a founding father of University radio station KBSB - FM90. He worked as a disc jockey. In 1972, he accepted a vice President position at Mid Central Savings and Loan in Long Prairie, Minnesota until 1988.

In 1977, he met the love of his life on a blind date. Deborah and Jerome in 1977 where their hearts were entwined forever. In 1988, he re-instated in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Ripley, Minnesota. Eventually transferring to Arlington, Virginia in 1998 and retiring from Army career in 2005. He was a proud Army veteran. Active in the American Legion, VFW, and a major contributor to the National Museum of the United States Army. He was a member of the Thurmont Lions Club, Capital Chapter of the BMW car club, Association of the United States Army, Minnesota Historical Society, Beltrami County Historical Society, Bemidji State University Alumni & Foundation, The American Legion post 0012 in Long Prairie, Minnesota, VFW post 7050 in Melrose, Minnesota, and Central State Numismatic Society.

After retiring, his main hobby was model railroading and trains. He loved to use his creativity and his woodworking skills to help him build a model railroad layout and to build structures for his layouts. He loved to learn more about the hobby by going to operating sessions and enjoyed riding on steam locomotives. He loved to participate in railfanning with his daughter Elizabeth and who he enthusiastically passed down the joy of model trains. Quoting from Jerry's Superintendent's bio he wrote, "I have a love for all scales in the hobby, but my main interests are On30, On3, and 2-rail O scale. A new narrow-gauge layout is currently in the construction stage. This is a point to point, 33-mile common carrier and logging railroad once headquartered in North-Central Minnesota." His On30 layout was inspired by the Minneapolis, Red Lake, & Manitoba, (MRL&M). He belonged to the National Model Railroad Association and with his daughter. He was a member of Western Maryland Railway Historical Society, and O Scale Kings. He dedicated a lot of weekends on the restoration of the East Broadtop Railroad in Pennsylvania. He was currently superintendent of the South Mountain division of the National Model Railroad Association at the time of his death.

Master Sergeant Skeim will be interred at Camp Ripley National Military Cemetery in August 2021 with full military honors and presidential memorial certificate.

Jerry was married to my cousin. When we first met him my impression was that he was the nicest, calmest, happiest man I had ever met. He would stay with us occasionally and was always the sweetest guest. He will be missed by many. Rest in peace Jerry.

So wish I could have visited with Jerry one last time. I worked with him at the radio station in Bemidji and I also knew him thru my cousin Gary Nelson. He and Jerry were good friends in high school. Jerry was just a nice guy and always looked out for me when we worked together. He was like a big brother to me. I will always remember his kindness. Sorry I didn't get to meet with you and Jerry when you came to Minnesota. Take care and just know he was the best! I hope that Gary and Jerry have met up there and are talking about adventures and the good old days in Bemidji. Loved them both.

Memories of high school years together focus on Jerry's character traits. He was gentle, friendly, kind, unassuming, always with a good sense of humor, and always happy to be involved with his friends. We shared interests in technology and broadcasting in the early days of the transition from vacuum tube to transistor technology. It is most wonderful that my friend, Jerome, was blessed by a loving wife, Debbie, children, grandchildren, and pets. Thanks, Jerry, for your many years of service in the Army that benefitted us all!

Jerry shared my BMW passion (all us car guys are pretty much cut from the same cloth). I'm grateful to have met him. I hope that, wherever he is, he's driving his favorite car on a winding road on a sunny day.

I knew Jerry when we were students at Bemidji State and worked together at KBSC, the student radio station. He was very helpful to me in getting my career in broadcasting off to a start. I was unaware of his extensive military background. Thank you for your service, Jerry. Rest in peace, my friend.

I knew Jerry from working with him at Mid-Central Savings & Loan in Long Prairie Mn. He hired me many years ago and I have many fun memories of him. One of the most memorable thoughts I have of Jerry were from our yearly Christmas parties. He took it upon himself to get the gifts that were given to the employees. He would go to the local gift shop and pick out unique gifts that were thoughtful and made me feel like it was coming from Jerry himself and not just a generic gift. He put a lot of thought into these gifts. When he came back to Minnesota he would stop at the bank to say "hi". It was always enjoyable to see him.

We attended many, many military balls with great friends we'll never forget. And had the best parties at these functions. Laughing, dancing, and creating the fabric of our strong love together. Thank you to all our wild and funny friends, you know who you are . These wonderful times were etched into our hearts. GO ARMY!!!

I first meet Jerry through work. Little did I know how wonerful a friend he and Debbie ould become. I was on contract at Guard Bureau and was very lucky to stay with the Skeims for 3 months. Jerry's humor always brightened the day whether at work and home. I'm thankful everyday to call him my friend.

I knew Jerry from model railroading. Later he and Elizableth joined our restoration work crew in Robertsdale (the mining town on the EBT).
He was the sort of guy that made you want to do well, to be kind, honest, and to do the job correctly, just because you didn't want to let him down.
What a good man.

A few years ago I reconnected with my cousin. When Jerry came to the west coast for meetings, we'd get together for lengthy dinners & conversation. I too miss the emails of jokes and funny stores that he would send. He'll be missed but the memories are still with us.

I met Jerry in 1975 when we were both managers of branch offices of Mid-Central Federal Savings & Loan. Jerry was a very interesting person. I remember one time we were at a meeting in Bloomington, and that night we went out for dinner at Eddie Webster's and Jerry put on quite a show as the wine server offered us our choices of wine. Jerry went through the whole gambit as wine tasting connoisseur and impressed all of us with his knowledge. We had kept in touch through all these years with emails, phone calls, and letters. He'd stop in at work when he and Deb would come back to Minnesota for a visit, and I'll surely miss him.

Jerry enjoyed hiking every spring and summer, with his daughter, Elizabeth. They hiked the many trails in the Catoctin mountains. His was always fit and up to any adventure. They loved spending time together in nature. This led to many precious memories being made over the years. This was just one of the many adventures they shared as father and daughter. I am happy to say he hiked 2 weeks before Covid 19 struck him. He was active to the end. We miss him every day and have a whole in our hearts that only memories can fill. Peace and love go with you always , dear Jerry. Dad and the best husband ever. Deborah, Spouse

I met Jerry when I was 19, I was going to school with Deb his wife (GF at the time). He was so easy to visit with. Years later when he and Deb came to visit us in NM he was so facinated with everything we did and saw, he was so intellegent and new a lot of history (things I've never knew before). My kids really took a liking to him, he was so nice to them and always included them in conversation. He will be missed!

I knew him as Jerry. We served in the 3rd Infantry Division´s, Marne Glee Club together. Jerry, sang tenor and served as manager. I was the director. We saw each other a few times when I moved to Mpls. We spoke by phone once in a while. Not often enough. For the last few years, it was through the email chain of jokes and funny stories he would send out. When they stopped, I felt something was missing. The laughs, guffaws, the `dad jokes´, or simply the smiles that he shared with us, were missed. That´s when I checked and found this Legacy. Jerry, you´ll always be a Dogface Soldier, to me. `Flights of angels...´, my friend.

Jerry was the love of my life for over 40 years. We have made many happy memories together. I will miss him the rest of my life. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. He was most proud of his Army career. A great veteran. He secretly bought many train engines, in preparation for his retirement. Surprise ing me with all he had collected!! He worked everyday on his model layout in the basement. Always making improvements to his work. Jerry LOVED model railroading. His passion for life will live on in his children and grandchildren.
LOVE FOREVER AND EVER. DEBBIE XOXO
