Nance Geiger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 4 to Jun. 6, 2021.
Nance Jo Geiger May 31, 2021 Nance Jo Geiger died on May 31, 2021 of long lasting effects of ovarian cancer. Nance was born October 25, 1946 in Grand Forks North Dakota to the late Glenn G. and Mary Hart Geiger. She was predeceased by a brother Grant Geiger. Nance is survived by her son, Stephen Charles (Elizabeth) Nicholson, her daughter, Heather Nicholson and her longtime companion and partner Howard Kligerman who loved her dearly. She is also survived by her step daughter, Emily Kligerman(Joseph) Benaron and step son Jordan (Dr. Olga) Kligerman, and her grandsons Eli, Ezra, Silas and August Kligerman. She leaves a dear sister, Lori (Daniel) Carlton, devoted brothers Glenn(Nancy) Geiger, Daniel (Susan)Geiger and Scott (Gaye)Geiger along with numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Nance grew up in Westchester County NY and graduated from Syracuse University in 1968. She worked as a social worker in New York City and eventually returned to the Syracuse area where she has since lived. She worked during and after college at the original Scotch and Sirloin where she became an active part of the DeWitt community. As a swim instructor and later as Aquatic Director at the old Jewish Community Center, Nance taught many current Eastside residents how to swim. She was long-time treasurer of the Section III Swim Officials Association, officiating at many local, county, state and national swim meets. She was an avid runner, hiker, cross country skier, gym rat and gardener. Her house was always filled with flowers. She spent twenty-five years as a school counselor, primarily at Henninger High School, earned a Masters degree in Counselor Education from Syracuse University and was permanently certified in New York as well as being a National Certified Counselor. She will be missed by so many who loved and admired her for her devotion to family, commitment to service, undivided loyalty to her friends, strong sense of justice and enduring support of those in her circle of friends. She never forgot a birthday for anyone in her family and was extraordinarily generous. Per Nance's request there will be no service or burial. To remember and honor her, plant flowers, walk in a beautiful forest path, admire the songbirds and turn your face to the sun and absorb its warmth and strength. Thanks are due to nurse Christine Burton whose caring knew no bounds, Alicia Mooney for her loving touch, nurse Kathy Anania, Hospice of Central New York, Gyn oncology of Syracuse and all others who cared for Nance during this challenging time of herlife. Hers was a life well lived and one that touched many. Our hearts are broken but will heal in the warmth of her remembrance. She loved to wander. Please sign the guestbook at syracuse.com/obits

Nance was a wonderful woman. I first met her when she did a Counseling Internship at LeMoyne College's Upward Bound Program. Her strength and compassion and cultural competency will remain her legacies. My deepest condolences to Howard and their family...May her memory be a blessing.

I don't remember the first time I met Nance as well as not remembering when she began calling me 'sweetie'.
Nance was my neighbor and friend and interwoven into my family's lives.
When I moved into my husband's house, I was welcomed into a beautiful and supportive network of community and daily rhythms. Planting, tending and harvesting vegetable gardens...seed parties and plant consultations, evening walks, and impromptu chats, waking to find Nance choosing and cutting her flower bouquet from my front yard, my husband planting sunflowers under her window because she loved them, and it attracted her birds she loved so much to watch, I loved that she knew more about my dog's backyard antics than I did, Nance started a neighborhood book club that was ongoing for maybe 12 years and Nance always read the book!
Nance was there in the middle of the night to stay with my daughter when I had to rush my husband to the hospital. I love that my tough and boisterous husband would check would check with Nance about his new plans for the yard and house and be very aware of ' what Nance would like...and/or allow.
There is so much more, but mostly what I will forever love and remember is that my reserved and quiet friend always called me 'sweetie.'

I am not exaggerating when I say that Nance changed my life when I was her student at Henninger in the 80s. Her influence remains with me still. I am so sorry for your loss.

I have the most wonderful memories of Nance in our HS counseling circles back in the day. I always loved seeing her and working with her. She was the best and I'll never forget her. Love and support to Howard and her whole family>
