Nancy BUICK Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Apr. 25 to Apr. 27, 2013.
BUICK, Nancy
November 8, 1926 - April 21, 2013
Nancy Margaret Dombeski and her four sisters and one brother were raised and schooled in Renfrew, in north Calgary. She met dashingly handsome Ronald Buick while he was in Calgary, days before he left for Europe as a RCAF navigator in WWII. They wrote almost daily and he was determined to return home safely so they could be married. She lived her entire life in Calgary, yet managed to visit 63 countries, always with Ron, her husband of 65 years. Whether she was parasailing, riding an ostrich, sailing up a river in Borneo and staying the night with headhunters, or having poisonous snakes crawling over her in an Asian temple, travel was never dull. She had a keen eye for interesting souvenirs, and her home was like a museum. International travel was a far cry from the early days, when her vacations were to the family cabin on Jackfish Lake near North Battleford, SK. Rustic was an understatement. Nancy made do with an ice box, wood stove, hand-pumped water and an outhouse. When the kids were young, card games, especially bridge, and any kind of board game were the high point of many evenings. She never missed an event if family was involved, and was always there with a shoulder to lean on. As an original member of the Calgary Winter Club, she was an avid bowler and curler. While kids swimming and badminton lessons kept her busy in Calgary, she also spent many hours on the road, attending Highland dance competitions across the province. Golfing, often at Confederation Park near her Charleswood home, kept her young and trim. Relaxation to Nancy was reading a good book. Family and friends were important and she looked forward to the annual family Christmas "reunions". It is with love in our hearts that we wish you well in this final, and epic, journey. Say hi to Ron for all of us - he's been waiting one year and five days for your arrival. You will be with us forever. Your children – Debbie, Jeff and Karen; grandchildren Leanne (Mac), Tyler (Liz), Shawn, Justin (Cara) and Matt; great-grandchildren Mikayla and Lyndon; sisters Sharyn (Fred) and Lynn (Robert) (Mary and Doreen - deceased) and brother Jack (Cecile) and their families. A joint celebration of their lives for both Nancy and Ronald (deceased April 16, 2012) will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Service (5502 - 2 Street S.W., one block east of Macleod Trail at 53 Avenue) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Friends and family welcome. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Nancy's family through www.evanjstrong.com. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. Telephone: 403-265-1199.
