Nancy Ruth Cunningham

Nancy Ruth Cunningham (nee Travers), 85, of Lexington, MA, passed away on January 2, 2024. She was born on April 22, 1938, in Walpole, MA to the late Walter and Kathryn (Belle) Travers.

Nancy was a beloved and cherished member of her family. She possessed a warm and adventurous spirit, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her loving nature extended to her family, and she always prioritized their happiness and well-being. Nancy's passion for cooking and exploring new destinations made her life vibrant and fulfilling.

She is survived by her daughters Denise Abell and her husband Michael Abell of Wilmington, MA, Nancy Thornell and her husband Daniel Thornell of Barnstead, NH, and Carla Andrade of Reading, MA. Nancy's presence will be deeply missed by her adoring grandchildren Kathryn and Harold Abell, Reilly, Daniel, Geraldine, and Victoria Thornell, and Adam and Nicole Andrade. She is also survived by her brothers Gerald Travers of WA, Walther Travers of HI, and Christopher Travers of FL.

Nancy received her education from Mount St. Joseph in Brighton, MA, graduating in 1956. She further pursued her passion for nursing at Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. Her dedication and commitment to caring for others led her to a successful career in the medical field. Nancy served at Waltham Hospital from 1974 to 1991, Deaconess Waltham Hospital from 1991 to 1992, and as a traveling nurse from 1997 to 2001.

Nancy's devotion to her country was evident through her service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the USAR until her retirement in 2002. Her military associations and accomplishments brought great honor to her name.

In her leisure time, Nancy found solace in the pages of books, the excitement of new adventures, and the art of cooking. These hobbies allowed her to express her creativity and passion.

A traditional Celebration of Life will be held in the spring, in accordance with Nancy's wishes.
