Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2013.
Nancy America Gruenberg
January 3, 1925 - July 7, 2013
Nancy was born in Virginia and grew up there. She spent the rest of her life in Michigan. She was a daughter, sister, jazz singer, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, nurse, and friend. She was also an advocate for service men and women, the homeless, and higher education. She always tried to enrich our lives and encouraged us to be kind to all people and animals, study and work hard, and enjoy the arts. She is survived by her four children--Eric Gruenberg of Los Altos, CA, Kurt Gruenberg of Royal Oak, MI, Leif Gruenberg of Oxford, Mi, and Sigrid McGinty of Elizabeth, CO. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren--Alexander Gruenberg of Waterford, MI, Alexie, Ansel, and Axel Gruenberg of Clarkston, MI, Sgt. Ariel Gruenberg of Fort Lewis, Washington, Kaitlin Lindenburger of Klamath Falls, OR , Kiana and Kiley Gruenberg of Los Altos, CA, Owen Gruenberg of Ballock, Alexandria, Scottland, and Warren Gruenberg of Dumbarton, West Dumbartonshire, Scottland. She has left behind other loving relatives including Annette Gruenberg of Oxford, MI, Leah Robinson of New York, NY, Lori Sutherland of Clarkston, MI, Patrick McGinty of Elizabeth, CO, and Shirley Robinson of New York, NY, and many friends.

Nancy requested this poem to be listed in her obituary:

"On Dying"

I am standing on the seashore.
A ship spreads her white sails
to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
I stand watching her until she fades on the horizon.
Someone at my side says "she is gone!"
"Gone, gone where?"
The loss of sight is in me – not in her.
Just at the moment when someone says "she is gone!" there are others who are watching her coming.
Other voices take up the glad shout – "Here she comes!"
and that, to me, is dying.

Sigrid, Eric, Leif and Kurt,
My condolences on the passing of your mother. She was a good friend for almost forty years. We had many good times together (Ann Arbor Art Fairs, Arts and Crafts shows, Meadowbrook Theater, Lunches at local restaurants,etc.). I admired her tenacity and determination. She is now free to greet new experiences without pain.
