Nancy Michael Obituary

Nancy Mollin Michael, 63, an accomplished scientist in virology and immunology, died March 30, 2006 in her home in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. The cause of death was brain and spinal cancer. She was also an avid gardener, great cook, hiker, reader, swimmer and a wonderful mother, wife, family member and friend. As a laboratory researcher, she was the author of major publications on viral regulatory proteins and somatic hypermutation of antibody genes. During her career she worked in labs at Rockefeller University, Columbia University, Stanford University, University of Copenhagen and for the past two decades at the University of Chicago. Nancy was raised in Akron, OH and educated at Ohio Wesleyan University (BA), Indiana University (MA) and University of Chicago (Ph.D.). She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert; their daughter, Alice and son, Tom; two grandchildren Daniel and Sadie; and her sister Leslie Mollin. Memorial service will be held Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 3 p.m. in Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Nancy Michael Memorial Fund at The Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago, 773-702-4522 or to the Sierra Club.
