Nancy Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 22 to Feb. 26, 2023.
Nancy Elizabeth Wood Mitchell Oct. 14, 1950 - Feb. 6, 2023 Nancy was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and spent most of her youth in Huntsville, Alabama before moving to Birmingham after college. She graduated from Auburn University where she was chaplain and later president of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta. Nancy started her career as a Satellite Coordinator with North Central Alabama Mental Health Center. While there, she met and later married her husband James M. Mitchell III. During her time at NCA MHC, she attained a Graduate Specialist in Gerontology certificate from the University of Alabama, where she would also later receive a master's degree in social work. Her practicum involved working with the House of Representatives Committee on Aging in Washington DC. Nancy worked briefly at DPS, followed by a long stint at Western Mental Health Center as Transitional Home Director and therapist, and finally at Eastside Mental Health Center as an outpatient therapist and therapist on the ACT Team. She always expressed the love and respect she had for those she worked with, both staff and clients. She was involved with many professional and charitable organizations such as the Mental Health Association, the Widowed Persons Service, the National Council on Aging, Meals on Wheels, Project Head Start and Project Discovery. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Charles L. Wood, her mother, Marjorie Jean Wood, and her husband, James M. Mitchell III. She is survived by her children James M. Mitchell IV (Bernadette), Elizabeth Laurie Wood Mitchell and Jennifer Marie Heffner (David), and her grandchildren Jane Mitchell, Tristan Heffner and Jillian Heffner. She also leaves behind a sister, Carolyn Woodfin Larsen (Tom), and brothers Charles L. Wood Jr. (Karan) and Thomas David Wood (Sheila) and their children. Nancy was selfless, giving and kindhearted. Nancy expressed gratitude for her family, her Church and her very dear friends for the support she received following the death of her husband and through the entirety of her illness. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. Her faith was strong, and she practiced it daily. Her memorial service will be held at St. Mark United Methodist Church (2901 Columbiana Rd, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216) on Thursday, March 2nd. Visitation is at 12PM, service will be held at 1PM.

Nancy was my high school love. We shared our growing up moments as she was a high school majorite and I played guitar in a local rock group. I wil forever love Nancy, her sister, and her wonderful parents and brothers. I do look forward to seeing and worshipping our Lord when we again meet with our heavenly father.

It is so hard to say good-bye to my dear friend Nancy. Always filled with optimism, she was one of the kindest people I´ve ever known. We met on the job over 41 years ago and quickly became friends. Through the years, I witnessed the patience, care, generosity and love that she bestowed on everyone she met whether family, friend, or clients in the workplace. Nancy was always ready to "give another chance," "try one more thing." I won´t forget my dear friend and, because of her, I will remember that "The glass is half FULL."
