Nancy Pickens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2016.
PICKENS Nancy Shore Clinard, wife of Rupert T. Pickens III, for 52 years, died Jan 4, 2016, at the age of 73. She was born May 13, 1942, in High Point, NC, the daughter of John Wilson Clinard, Jr., and Lelia Shore Thomas Clinard. She graduated from High Point High School (now Central High) in 1960, attended the Woman's College of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1964 with a B.A. in Education. She taught at Carrboro Elementary School, Carrboro, NC, before staying at home with her young children. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: John Armfield Pickens of Lexington, KY, and Edward Munyan Pickens (Martha Danek) of Bynum, NC; two grandchildren, Anna Louise Danek Pickens and Benton Thomas Danek Pickens of Bynum, NC; one sister, Lelia (T) Thomas Clinard Butler (Lindley Butler) of Wentworth, NC; one brother, John Wilson Clinard, III, (Linda Clinard) of Irvine, CA; and four nephews, one niece, nine first cousins, and one aunt, Mary Alan (Sis) Clinard Flinn of Wake Forest, NC. After moving from Chapel Hill, NC, to Lexington, KY, in 1969, she continued to stay at home with her sons and volunteered with several local organizations. In 1976 she began working as secretary at Dixie Elementary School, where she remained until she resigned in 1984 to begin graduate studies at the University of Kentucky. She earned an MSLS degree in Library Science in 1985 and soon after began working at the Kentucky Department of Archives, Frankfort, KY, first as a document preservationist in the Archives Division and later as a cataloger in the Library Division's Technical Support Branch. After retiring in 1999 she continued to volunteer with several organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, God's Pantry, and Project Linus, for which she made numerous blankets. She loved music, travel, reading, and nature and especially treasured time spent at her family's mountain retreat in Ashe County, NC. She was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Lexington, where she served as a member of the Archives Committee and a Lay Eucharistic Visitor; she coordinated Pastoral Care Ministries for over 15 years. She was a former member of the choir and served two terms on the Vestry. A memorial service will be led by the Rev. Laurie Brock at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael the Archangel, 2025 Bellefonte Drive, Lexington, KY 40503, at 3pm on Fri, Jan 8, preceded by a visitation and followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Interment of her ashes will take place at a later date at Oakwood Memorial Park in High Point, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Michael's music programs or to God's Pantry, 1685 Jaggie Fox Way, Lexington, KY 40511.
