Nancy Ruth Slate, 80, died December 27, 2019 in Manchester. She was born in Claudville, VA and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sally Slate. Nancy grew up one of fourteen children on a tobacco farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She attended Radford College, Women's Division of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, graduating with a BA in Education. Her career as a teacher eventually brought her to Montpelier, Vermont where she raised her two daughters, Sarah and Miriam Novogrodsky. She married the love of her life, Dennis Mires in 1989, moving to Manchester and working in Pittsfield, NH where she created a robust physical education program. As an educator, she ascribed to the philosophy, "Never give up on a child." Nancy and her husband, Dennis, loved exploring museums, going to films and taking walks. Weekend mornings were reserved for reading newspapers and books, side by side. Their home on Swans Island, ME was an especially important part of their life together. Nancy loved to feed her family, as much as they loved being fed. Her insight into the human condition made one pause to consider another perspective, often wider and wiser than one's own. Her generosity and laughter will be remembered by all who knew her. Nancy had lifelong friends. They supported each other through challenges and celebrations. Her siblings were her touchstones. They loved her from the beginning, and all the way to the end. Nancy is survived by her husband, Dennis B. Mires, Miriam Novogrodsky and her children Gabriel and Sadie Goldfarb, Sarah Novogrodsky (husband, Daniel Losen) children Samuel and Leonard Losen, Amy Mires Ledwell (husband, Bob Ledwell) son Jack Ledwell and Jon Mires (wife Emily Corwin) and Cole and Lane Mires. In laws, Larry Mires and Rebecca Davison, Richard Mires and Nancy Mires, and Clark Mires. She is also survived by sisters and brothers in Virginia and Alabama and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street, Manchester on Friday, January 3, from 2 - 4 PM. Interment will be in the Spring on her family farm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her memory to Reach Out for Youth and Families, Granite YMCA, (Fund Development) 117 Market Street, Manchester, NH 03101.

I was saddened to read of Nancy's passing. We shared the gym at Pittsfield Elementary school for all the years that she was there. We made a good team as I was the school's occupational therapist and I could always count on her to assist with providing adaptive physical education for those that needed it. I loved talking to her and her laugh/smile. She was an asset to PES and I missed her when she retired. My condolences to you all.

To Dennis, Sarah, and Miriam,
Nancy graced our family, as she graced everywhere she was, with her generosity, good humor, wisdom, and intelligence. I never could understand how she managed to do everything so fast and so well, and make it look easy. Her passing is a source of deep sorrow to me as as it is to everyone who knew her. I wish you comfort in the memories of all the love you shared through the years.

Dennis, Sarah and Miriam- I have had a rush of wonderful memories of Nancy in the last few days. She welcomed me into the family in 1967 as my sister-in-law. I will always remember the time Charlie and I stayed with Sarah and MIriam when Nancy was exploring a job in Prince Edward Island. She was interviewed in a farmer's field and the farmer's horse kicked her. She came back to Vermont in gales of laughter proclaiming that she had gotten away from the farm and wasn't going back. Then there was the time Nancy and I bought winter coats in Toronto directly from the sweat shop on Spadina Avenue. They had these 1960's chinchilla collars and we thought we were the most fashionable ladies around. We loved our time with Dennis and Nancy in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico a few years ago and were thrilled that they bought a major painting which graces their home in Manchester. Nancy never dwelled on her illness- she always asked about everyone else and talked about herself last. We will forever miss Nancy.

Nancy's joy of spirit and love helped form a family hub on the east coast for all of us to enjoy! All were welcomed, at any time, to Nancy and Denny's home. Our family will cherish the many memories of visiting there and her genorsity toward her west coast family. Nancy raised two amazing daughters, loved her two step children and their families, She still had room in her heart for her west coast family's children, too! We will miss you Nancy.

Nancy has been a part of my family life since I was a teenager. She was a teacher in the best sense of the word. By example and by her presence Nancy taught. When I was a young phys. ed. teacher I gained confidence and ideas by listening to Nancy describe her work. She delighted in kids and their potential. She loved the ways kids skip; she instinctively knew that real phys. ed. is rooted in play itself. She loved and supported and took interest in our family in ways we can never forget. May Nancy's memory serve as blessing for her friends and family.
