Nancy Strawn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 2, 2023.
Our loving mother, aged 85, passed peacefully on April 17, 2023 in Spring, Texas. A cherished mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Nancy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Always looking forward to spending time with friends and family, she unfailingly brought an open heart and a ready laugh for every conversation, preferably over a glass of delicious wine.

Nancy Hogan Strawn was born on February 14, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, to Kenneth Patrick and Sue Hogan and worked hard to put herself through school at the University of Detroit Mercy. Graduation was her jumping off point from the long midwestern winters as she headed south for warmer climates in Atlanta and New Orleans to work for Delta airlines as a flight attendant that fed her love for travel, camaraderie, warm weather and sunshine. It was while living in New Orleans that she met James D Strawn, her future husband of 40 years until his passing. They married in 1963 and started a family with sons J. Mark and Scott Strawn born in New Orleans, but ultimately decided that Northwest Houston offered more opportunities and moved to Greenwood Forest in 1970 where their daughter Leigh Ann (Strawn) Leonauskas was born. Nancy's naturally outgoing and engaging personality and drive to live life to its fullest enabled her to connect and make a multitude of lifelong friends here while raising the family. It is also where she developed her passion for tennis and weekends spent boating and skiing at Lake Conroe.

For work and new adventures, she, Jim and Leigh Ann transferred to San Diego for 12 years before deciding that Texas felt more like the home they sought for retirement so they packed up and moved to Bentwater on Lake Conroe. As with the other stops in her life, Nancy quickly connected and had a circle of dear friends in Bentwater as well.

In her later years, her tenacity, spirit and faith in God got her through a number of challenging times from the passing of her husband to a severe case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome and through multiple rounds of cancer to bounce back and lived independently until her passing. However she was the first to say that she would not have gotten as far as she did without the unwavering support, assistance and love from her circle of friends and family.

Nancy loved her animals, travel, tennis, sharing a drink and laugh with friends, but she treasured her family holidays and especially the time spent with each of her four grandchildren Lindsey, Becca, Nate and Evan.

Nancy is survived by her children and their spouses, J. Mark and Oni Strawn, Scott and Ann Strawn, and Leigh Ann Leonauskas, her granddaughters Lindsey and Becca Strawn, grandsons Nate and Evan Leonauskas, her brother James Hogan & wife Christine Hogan as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6th, 2 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Plantersville, TX. Her interment will be at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and Cemetery at a later date. A reception at Bentwater Yacht Club will be immediately following the mass.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to K9 for Warriors in Memory of Nancy Strawn, https://k9sforwarriors.org [Notification to: Mark Strawn, 2810 Franklin Street, #25, San Francisco CA 94123] or the charity of your preference.

How I loved working at the Village and having Nancy as a friend. She was so loving and yes loving her pets. She was always a light each time she visited me in the Bistro. Mona Holcombe

Leigh Ann, Mark and Scott-
Your mom was so warm and kind. I always loved being around her. I remember both of your parents fondly and spending lots of time at your house before they moved to California. I love how she loved her dogs so much. Thinking about all of you today and wishing I could be there. I know she is so missed-such an amazing mom you got to have! Love you.

Mark, Scott and Leigh Ann, our condolences for your loss. The Strawn family has always been a big part of the DeVore family growing up. Your mother was always kind and generous, and I have fond memories of all our boat and camping trips, and growing up with you in Greenwood Forest. Our prayers go out to all of you.

So sorry for your loss. I think in the majority of my memories of your mom she was wearing a tennis skirt. I remember she played and played often. She was always sweet and kind. Hugs and prayers
