Nancy Strong Obituary

Published by Tampa Bay Times on Aug. 16, 2009.
STRONG, Nancy Teaby 75, of Gulfport, passed away peacefully on August 9th at Suncoast Woodside Hospice Hospital. Nancy was a joyous and adventuresome woman who set goals in life and met them. Born in Monterey, California and raised in Carmel, CA and Burlingtron, VT. She came to Florida in 1958. She is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Paschal Nielson Strong, Ph.D.; her sister, Joan DeVore; four children: Geri Lyn Doherty, John S. Doherty, Stephen L. Doherty and William G. Doherty; and 3 grandchildren: Travis, Scarlett and William. A world traveler, in her lifetime, she had many facets in her busy and productive life. She was a crack water-skier, held a 100 ton U.S.C.G. captain's license, was a sailing instructor for Annapolis sailing school, and Womanship in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She earned a Masters Degree in Vocational Guidance at USF and was a licensed Mental Health Counselor and an associate professor of human services at St. Petersburg Junior College. After retirement she began painting and was recognized as new rising star in art. A memorial event will be held at Lewis House on the Eckerd College campus at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, August 22nd. The family request that donations in her memory be made to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation.

"I remember Nancy as a gracious, out-going and adventuresome woman with a ready smile and a listening ear. For all her bravado, she had a gentle side, at times, vulnerable. The best gifts she left behind are her children - Geri, Johnnie, Steve and Willie - resilient, thoughtful, tender and humorous human beings. Their curiousity, strength, intelligence and warmth will carry them through this confusing and tough time, because they have each other, as always, to lean on. God bless you and keep you all strong and open to this new journey without your mom." -----My love to you and to dear Pat - Laurie (King)

Nancy was one of the busiest and most creative people of our time. When I think of her, the adjective daring always is included. I can think of nothing she was afraid to try. She modeled a life of intellect, adventure, and art.

In addition to her personal strengths and talents, she was equally compassionate. I can remember a time of struggle in my own life during which she extended her friendship to me.

To know her was to love her. We'll all miss her, Geri.
