Nand Ralla Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from May 7 to May 8, 2008.

Nand Kour Ralla (Ahluwalia) Called Home by her Beloved John GOD looked around HIS garden, and found an empty place. HE then looked down upon the earth and saw YOUR tired face. He put his arms around YOU and lifted YOU to rest. GOD'S Garden must be beautiful HE always takes the BEST. He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So HE closed YOUR weary eyelids and whispered "Peace Be Thine." It broke OUR HEARTS to lose YOU, but YOU didn't go alone, For part of US went with YOU, the day GOD CALLED YOU HOME. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of NAND KOUR RALLA (Ahluwalia) on May 2nd, 2008 at the age of 94. She died peacefully and was predeceased by her husband, Ralla Singh (John). Nand Kour, daughter of Bishan Singh and Prem Kour, was born in Longowal Village in the district of Sangrur in 1913. Ralla Singh, who immigrated to Canada in 1906, returned to India in 1929 and married Nand Kour in 1931. The two pioneers returned to Canada in July 1933, where they settled in Hillcrest, Vancouver Island, before moving to Lake Cowichan. Ralla Singh passed away in 1950, leaving Nand Kour to raise their four children on her own. She moved to Vancouver in 1958. Her remarkable courageousness and strength were evident throughout her life in various roles as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. Nand Kour will always be known for working through a variety of challenges to provide the best for her family. Her loving spirit will be eternally missed. Nand Kour is survived by her sons, Gurdave (Manjit), Aptar (Surjit), Joseph (Leslie) and her daughter Gladys Sidhu (Gurcharan). She will be greatly missed by her 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two older sisters (Chand Kaur and Kartar Kaur) and many nephews and nieces back in India. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton Harron Funeral Home, 5390 Fraser St., Vancouver., followed by a prayer service at 2:00 p.m. at the Ross Street Gurdwara, 8000 Ross St., Vancouver. We mourn a pioneer.
