NATHALIE BABEL BROWN, daughter of renowned Russian writer Isaac Babel, died on December 8, 2005, at Washington Medical Center from a pulmonary thromboembolism following surgery. Born in Paris, France in 1929 and a Jewish survivor of German-occupied France, Ms. Babel Brown graduated from the Sorbonne and came to the United States in 1961 to teach at Barnard College. She subsequently received a masters in Slavic studies (1964) and a doctorate in comparative literature (1970) from Columbia University, and taught at the Universities of Texas, California, and Ottawa. Ms. Babel Brown edited numerous volumes of her father's letters and stories, including "The Complete Works of Isaac Babel" (Norton, 2002), which won the Koret Jewish Book Award. She was the widow of Richard H. Brown, a sociologist at the University of Maryland, to whom she was married for 36 years. Ms. Babel Brown is survived by their son, Ramiro Brown, and granddaughters Sylvia and Nathalie of Zihuatanejo, Mexico; a half-sister, Lidya Babel, of Silver Spring, MD; and sisters-in-law Darlene Lancer and Leslie Patten of, respectively, Los Angeles and Marin County, CA. A memorial service honoring Ms. Babel Brown will be held in New York City in coming weeks.

I would like to add to my memories of Nat(h)alie Babel Brown, a kind, sincere, caring, smiling, friendly woman of a similar family descent to me, whom I met at Barnard College in the 1960s, my sympathy and best wishes to her son and both granddaughters. I read the fine available works of her father Isaac Babel while in college. Wherever the son and granddaughters are, as I share memories of Barnard and a professor mother- and studied Russian literature when young, I would be very glad to meet them. They are welcome to my Brussels home and also to my London flat where I spend less time. I regret I was not able to keep all my parents' books. I also have studied Russian history along with other European history. My homes are in Brussels and much less frequently in London NW3. Mrs. A. Helen Greene. My son when in London is named Edward Standring, a well-read biochemist who also appreciates art. My warmest and best wishes for a happy Healthy life to the three of you and any other relations. I am sure you carry on your fine good heritage- and I hope you also enjoy travelling which Nathalie clearly did. Peace always.

Natalie Babel was a colleague at Barnard College of my mother, Prof. T.W. Greene. When mother introduced her to me, she was very sincere, kind, therefore friendly and with a lovely natural smile. We met in the early 1960s. It is clear that her father who died when she was a child, had a positive, kind and encouraging effect on her. I wish I had known her better and that she had lived longer. I am glad to learn that we were both descended from Odessa Jewish intellectuals. I hope her son is well and has a good life. I have been a translator in Brussels since 1994. We have shared the joy of having a son.
