Im deeply saddened to learn of his passing today. I had the joy of having him as a professor last year. Ive always struggled with school due to mental illness and he was so understanding and supportive of my success. He exemplified what a professor should be, intelligent, compassionate, passionate for his students, and so much more. He was my favorite professor at UNCW and hoped to take a class of his again. On my darkest days his kindness and humor would always bring me joy. He is an inspiration and he gave me hope to never give up. My prayers are with his family and everyone he impacted.

You were my partner long before we ever got married. There are not enough words in the English language to truly honor you. The right words do not exist. You are too layered and complex to be captured, our love too pure and infinite. I read somewhere that home is a place where all attempts to escape cease. You were that for me, the safest place I have ever been and will ever be. Your brilliant mind, generous nature and loving soul knew no bounds. I can picture you right now kissing the dog before sleep because she was yours and you loved her. I will be forever yours as well.

Just heard of the passing of Mr. Mendenhall. I had the honor of having him as a professor recently at UMO. His personality was addictive and he always made class entertaining after a long day of work. Running on Chic-Fil-A time and his cheesy jokes will never be forgotten. Prayers to his family, wife, and dog that he always talked about.

Nate was my student in a critical theory undergraduate course so many years ago, and his good cheer made the class a positive experience for me and for his classmates. I always enjoyed seeing him in the hallways at UNCW and hearing his wonderful, contagious laughter. It will continue to echo in Morton Hall for a long time.

Nathan you always made the time to stop and say a happy hello. I can still hear your 'hide e ho' or some rendition of that :) You brightened the halls of Morton & UNCW and were loved by your students. Thank you for the sunshine.

I remember Nathan from your days in Bardstown. A skinny little boy full of energy. From all the lovely tributes, it is obvious he was his parents' son. Words can't express the sadness of your loss. May his spirit soar.

Sending love and prayers to my friend Shanna and to Nate's family during this difficult time. I did not know him well, but the love that he and Shanna shared was so beautiful and evident to all. It is a testament to the wonderful person he was.

My interaction with Nate only consisted of one night. I immediately liked him. He was so nice and genuine. I would have liked to had the opportunity to get to know him better. His passing was met with surprise, sadness and disbelief. My condolences go out to Shanna and Nate's family.

Nate was an excellent teacher and was recognized this past April as the University of Mount Olive's Adjunct Teacher of the year. Since UMO may utilize as many as 200 adjuncts in a given year, this recognition is a significant honor. The prayers of the UMO community are with Nate's family. May the grace and peace of God bring comfort and strength.

The bond between a father and son is a unique one. No matter what was happening in our lives, Nathan and I always had open communication. As he grew into adulthood we became good friends as well as family. I treasured his intellect, his easy manner, his openness and gentleness. We became fellow musicians and shared other interests. Though there were smooth times and some hard times. We could always talk and he never let me down. I loved him, respected him and was immensely proud of all that he achieved. Most of all I will miss his whimsical smile, his laugh, his strength, his wisdom and his gentle presence.

I didnt know Nate very well. In fact, I only knew him to come into my place of employment (Bonefish Grill) to order a filet mignon to go. I dont even know if he knew my name. It was cool, though. I always made sure to say hello, ask him how classes were going, etc. he was always super nice and had a smile to share. His passing has hit me surprisingly hard, and just wanted to relay my condolences to the family who I know was very fortunate to have him. Professor, you are missed.

No matter how well you may have known Nate, you knew within 5 minutes of meeting him that he was "one of the good ones". I'll miss his odd little laugh, the great conversations and the positive atmosphere that always surrounded him.

I didn't know Nathan very well, but you didn't have to know him well to know what kind of person he was. Warm, genuine, caring, intelligent, creative, and he always approached me with a smile and a greeting like we had know each other since childhood. Nathan and I worked together at UNCW and he will always stand out to me for his decency and his humor. To his family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. He was a good man who will be greatly missed.
