Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to Apr. 17, 2012.
Nathaniel Downing 1985 - 2012 PITTSFIELD Nathaniel Snow Downing of 123 Pomeroy Ave., who died suddenly Friday, will be remembered as a bright and charismatic young man with a passion for politics and for life. Mr. Downing was a 2003 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School. He excelled in academics while also participating in music, drama, and Model Congress. A 2007 magna cum laude graduate of Providence College, Mr. Downing studied Political Science and American Studies. He attended the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston, interned at the Supreme Court in Washington, DC, and worked on his brother Benjamin's successful bid for State Senate in 2006. After graduating from Providence, Mr. Downing joined the Attorney General's office as an investigator where he worked until 2009. In 2009 he entered New England School of Law to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer. He earned the honor of serving on the Law Review as an associate in his second year and an executive articles editor in his third year. While in school he worked as a legal analyst for Blue Cross Blue Shield. He recently volunteered for Joseph Kennedy III's congressional campaign, relishing an opportunity spend a day driving the candidate. Nathaniel Snow Downing was born Sept. 15, 1985, in Pittsfield, son of Pamela Brackett Downing and the late Berkshire County District Attorney Gerard Downing. In addition to his mother of Pittsfield, he leaves two brothers, State Senator Benjamin Downing of Pittsfield and Nicholas Downing of Boston, and a sister, Margaret Downing of Washington, DC. He also leaves many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. His grandparents, John and Gertrude Downing of Pittsfield and Frank and Shirley Brackett of Weymouth, predeceased him. FUNERAL SERVICES: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Nathaniel Snow Downing, who died April 13, 2012, will be celebrated Wednesday, April 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church by the Rev. Peter Gregory, pastor. Calling hours will be at the church only on Tuesday, April 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Downing's memory may be made to the Pediatric Heart Center at Children's Hospital Boston. Donations may be made in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield 01201, which is in charge of arrangements. To All The Downing Family,
Please accept my deep sympathy at the sad news of Nathaniel's death. I'm sure he must have been greeted by his "sainted" dad & his grandparents whom I met in my first assignment as a Priest in St. Charles Parish in 1960. His obituary reads as though he was about to continue in the footsteps of the Downing Family. Only an AllKnowing God can help us sort out the questions and hurt that you must feel at this time. Please know that I will celebrate a Mass for your Son & Brother, and for all the intentions of the Family. Sincerely, Fr. Dan Brunton
