WINSTON-SALEM - Dr. Nathaniel Edrington Hewitt, Jr., 65, of 217 Capistrano Drive, Winston-Salem, died, Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Wake Forest University Medical Center.
Born May 2, 1943, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Dr. Hewitt was the son of the late Nathaniel E. Hewitt and the late Theolinda Joseph Hewitt.
He received his B.S. Degree in Pre-Med; M.S. in Microbiology, and PhD. in Bio Chemical Genetics, from Howard University; Summer Studies in England and Switzerland; Post Doctorial Studies for two years at Oakridge National Laboratory with Ed Grier of Oakridge, Tennessee.
Dr. Hewitt Jr. retired June 28, 2007 after 31 years as a Professor at Winston-Salem State University.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Elizabeth Sloane and Natalie Hewitt.
Dr. Hewitt is survived by his wife of 44 years, Minnie Christian Hewitt of the home, whom he married October 13, 1964. Also children: two daughters, Denise Hewitt Chaplin and husband Willie Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Michelle Hewitt-Smith and husband James of Greensboro, two sons, Nathaniel E. Hewitt III and wife Janel of Longview, Tx., and Christopher E. Hewitt of Winston-Salem.
Other survivors are: a sister, Amabel Compton of St. Croix; cousin, reared as a brother, Aubrey Hewitt and Patricia of Piscataway, N.J., three grandchildren: Elena Simone Chaplin, Willie Christian Chaplin and Richard Edrington Hewitt; niece, Krystel Compton of St. Croix; nephews, Keith Compton Jr., Kel Compton and Yancey Sloane Jr. of St. Croix; special aunt, Agnes Belvin of California. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, and relatives of the Hewitt, Nicholas, Chinary and Joseph families, and other relatives too numerous to mention.
Viewing and Visitation: 10 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Hooper Funeral Home, 1415 E. 14th St., Winston-Salem.
Funeral: Saturday, 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at New Evergreen Cemetery, Winston-Salem.
Services are entrusted to Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home Inc., of Salisbury. Online condolences may be sent to nobleandkelsey.com.
