Neil DuBois Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Oct. 6, 2004.
DuBois Neil David DuBois, 21, died in a car accident early Sunday near his home in rural Leesburg, VA. A former resident of Eden Prairie, Neil worked for his grandparents, Whitey and Margaret Hubert, who have a nursery and vineyard called Tarara near Leesburg. He'd been attending Northern Virginia Community College where he hoped to study business. Neil was passionate about everything he pursued, especially snowboarding. He and his littler brother, Casey, learned on the slopes at Hyland Hills in Bloomington, MN. They went on to snowboard camp in Oregon and mountains out west, including last year's trek to Breckenridge, CO. Last year, Neil had won a snowboarding competition out east and had just learned that a snowboard shop in Frederic planned to sponsor him for the upcoming season. Neil was born in Dunedin, FL, and grew up in Little Falls, St. Cloud, Washington, D.C. and the Twin Cities. He is survived by his brothers, Casey and Ben, sister Jaime, mother Janet, father John and John's wife, Julie - and grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will always treasure his smile, his energy and his free spirit. Services will be held on Thursday at Pax Christi Church in Eden Prairie beginning with a gathering of friends and family at 3 p.m. followed by Mass at 4 and a light dinner and a chance to share stories. Memorials in Neil's name are preferred to Wilderness Inquiry, a St. Paul based group that takes people of all abilities into the wild places that Neil loved. Friends and loved ones are welcome to bring small tokens of affection that they might want to be with Neil's remains in nearby Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

dreamed about you...again. seemed like you were with me, in scene to scene, all night long. in one, your shoes were way too big. you showed me by putting both of your feet in one of them. yet, despite your small size, you were smoking. what a crazy scene. i'm sure it's symbolic. i still think of you everyday. i still shake my head in disbelief every day.

Neil, I miss you so much and just wish you could be snowboarding with me right now in Colorado. I want to show you so many things. I want to show you my new town, Fort Collins. My dorm that is small and old. The reservoir at Horsetooth where everyone hangs out when there's nice weather. I want to show you all the mountains I have been on and what I can do on my snowboard. I remember when you taught me first how to snowboard at hyland and I will never forget it. I love you so much and I just wish you come visit me at my new home. I know you would love it here.

For some reason I was drawn to this site today. I guess I just needed for someone/anyone to know how much this kid is missed. I have watched his dad, John, grieve like no other. He has tried and tried to move on, but it has been slow and arduous and not always successful. I have seen his brother, Casey, suffer from having lost his best friend; and sister, Jaime having lost her leader and big brother. There is a huge hole where Neil was in many people's hearts. Just the other day I was next to a pick-up at a stoplight. I glanced over and could have sworn I was sitting next to Neil. He was just such an amazing presence, that his energy and memory are still present in some way. Those who weren't loved or who didn't matter are forgotten. Obviously Neil was loved and did matter and will never be forgotten. Love to the family. Jana

My sympathy goes out to Neil's family. Even though I never knew Neil, Janet would often write about him. It is not suppose to be this way, where the parents outlive the child. I am sure my father, who passed away 7 years ago, will get to meet Neil in Heaven.

Janet, Casey & Jaime: my heartfelt sympathy to all of you. I remember the joy Neil had skateboarding and swimming at my home during your vacation in Phoenix. His vivaciousness was a treasure.

Oh Janet - I am so sorry - words fail to convey how much.

In some way that we may never know, Neil completed his mission here among us and has been called home. Perhaps it was to teach us about wonder and the power of love. It is so hard when we are left behind to carry on.

Believe that there is just a thin veil between this world and the next and that he is beyond harm and loving you right now.

Dear DuBois Family,

Our neighbors in EP, We are so deeply affected by Neils death. He spent some of time over at our house when he and our son Andrew were teens together in EP. He was a darling, polite, handsome, and enthusiastic boy, that we loved to see at our house.Though we had lost track, it sounds like Neil was flourishing! God Bless you, our prayers are with you.

"I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge, that myth is more potent that history. I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts, that hope always triumphs over experience, that laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death".

Dear DuBois Family,

I am very sorry to hear of this tragic news. Neil will always be in my heart. It was hard for me to hear about this, I have known him since I can remember, yes everyone from our St. Cloud neighborhood moved to different cities and different ways, but I always loved when we would get together and hang out. It will no longer be the same for no matter what path he was taking he had so much potential. I will keep him in my heart forever and I know he is in a better place for he is loved by so many and remembered by so many more.

God bless you all and I will see you soon.

Love always and forever Jennifer.
