Robert G. Michaels (class of 1970)
January 10, 2022
I have just become aware of the death of most respected UWO professor Dr. Neil Harriman. My learning experiences in his classes [Botany] have stuck with me throughout my teaching life. I'm sure hundreds of his students have expressed collegiate memories with/of association with Dr. Harriman.
I was an [innocent] wide-eyed freshman in Sept. 1965. I so remember many life changing lecture wisdom observations presented to his class for our common thoughtfulness.
" There is no substitute for excellence..."
" Not everyone is entitled to an opinion; informed people have earned the right to express it."
With most reverence and appreciation,
Robert G. Michaels (Bio major class of 1970)

My condolences to Bettie, and to Neil's friends far and wide. I was a student of Neil's thirty years ago; he offered a struggling farm kid a job in the herbarium. Neil was my first and most important mentor, and I can still remember many of his conversations and lectures. He taught me much about plants, and about life. Now that I am a university professor myself, I sometimes find myself imitating and quoting him. Rest in peace, dear Dr. Harriman.

I am so very fortunate to have known Neil for the better part of four decades. He was so outstanding in so many ways that there simply isn't enough space to list all of those qualities. He is the most compassionate, selfless, mindful and attentive man I've ever known. Even though I pale by comparison, Dr. Harriman never once made me feel anything but good about myself. Time and again he lifted my spirits when the easier choice would have been to simply turn me away. He made me believe in myself during the most trying times of my life, and often he was the only one standing in my corner. Without his unconditional support I would not be who I am today. Neil Arthur Harriman, Ph.D. was a giant among men. Hands down, there just ain't none better.
