Neil Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 19, 2014.
Surrounded by his family, Neil crossed the river and departed this earth, a brave warrior, December 19, 2014 at 4:30am, and has safely arrived in the celestial city. Unlike many surfing trips to the biggest waves all over the world in his 55 years, he arrived, this time, instantaneously. We know the surf is up, the weather's great, and many friends there to greet him.

Neil was a wonderfully gifted carpenter, in San Diego first, then for 30 years in Wilmington, NC. He loved God's creation and was happiest when in it. He loved surfing, hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing and painting pictures or making wood carvings of his fish exactly the size of his best catches. He did not want much; Neil wanted a beat up old truck, a boat, his tools and his workshop. His degree was in Geology from UNC-W, because Neil wanted to study God's creation. Neil loved the ocean at Wrightsville and Holden Beach so much, he decided to live there. Above all, Neil loved his friends who celebrated his life over the years on trips, on the beach, or on his deck in the back yard, but especially during his short illness. Dozens came from all over the U.S., from as far away as Hawaii. They sat for hours in an old barn shed behind his parents' home in Raleigh, NC, spinning yarns around a wood stove, used by his grandparents, Harrison and Larue Smith.

His friends gave his parents, Larry and Wanda Smith an unexpected gift; one that few parents are enabled to see. That is, a glimpse of their son through the eyes of his friends. What his parents saw is a man who accepted and cared for his friends for exactly who they were, where they were and what they were, with no judgments whatsoever. He made no effort to change them and fiercely challenged anything negative said about them. He truly lived by the Christian saying, "Live the Gospel, if necessary, use words." His friends and family knew he used very few.

His family, especially his sister, Lynne Smith King, who was his security blanket, cared for him 24/7 in the short months of his critical illness. Lynne's husband, David King lost his wife while Lynne slept on the sofa beside Neil's bed. His nephews, Shep King and his wife, Elyse and Lew King and his wife, Lauren were continuous caregivers. Fortunately they all live in Raleigh, NC which made this possible.

Two of his favorite scriptures are from 1 Cor 2:4-5 "Our faith does not rest in the wisdom of man, but in God's power. " and Psalm 16:11 "You will make known to me the faith of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; in your right hand there are pleasures forever."

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 1:00pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 6520 Ray Road, Raleigh, NC 27613. A reception and time of gathering will be held following the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Neil's memory may be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Aloha Larry, Wanda and Jane,
I would like to share some words and memories with you and maybe you can share this at the memorial for Neil:
On December 19 I lost one of my brothers of the sea, Neil Smith. His journey of life came to an end. I was one of the lucky people who got to be a part of his wonderful life. Larry and Wanda did a terrific job, as Neil wa a man's man, STRONG, KIND and WELL-ROUNDED. We rode some great waves together, shared the times of our lives. Those times and memories and Neil's SPIRIT will live within us forever.
Your brother of the SEA!
With warmest ALOHA to you Neil.....
Me Kealoha Pumehana (with fondest love),

A better person, I have yet to meet. Neil's great laugh and subtle sense of humor is forever etched in my memory. His inner strength, grace and quiet dignity was unbelievable. I am forever grateful to Neil for sharing his family and friends with the California girls. The gifted artist and master craftsman is cruising around with a big set of wings surfing the heavens on the perfect Skip Frye board.

A big thank you to Neil's family for giving us the privilege of a little more time with this special man. Neil has enriched my life in more ways than I can relate. I'll think of him every day as I look at his fishing spot on Mission Bay!! From your San Diego family.

Neil's inner strength, grace and quiet dignity was unbelievable and it is a blessing to call him my friend. This gifted artist and master craftsman is cruising around with a big set of wings and he's probably surfing the heavens on the perfect Skip Frye board. I am forever grateful for the wonderful family and friends that Neil shared with us California girls. And a big thank you to Neil's family for giving us the privilege of a little more time with this special man!! Love you forever!!

I met Neil and his wonderful family 38 years ago when I came to North Carolina to attend Elon. Neil was like one of my brothers. I saw how kind he was when Lynne asked him to take in a cat that we found at Holden on one our beach trips. I watched him surf at Holden. I admired his craft of carpentry and painting. Neil, your light will shine on for all to see.

N is for Nature. Nature was his element.

E is for Exemplary. An exemplary carpenter.

I is for Illuminate. Neil illuminated our lives.

L is for Love. Neil was loved by many.

Condolences to Larry, Wanda, Lynne, David, Shepard, Elyse, Lewis, Lauren, and all his family and friends.

My thoughts are with his family and friends! Heard a number of nice things about this man!!

December 21, 2014

Neil Smith. I surfed with Neil for probably 25 plus years and I never heard a negative word out of him . Great since of humor. All around fun guy to be around Low key, quiet, hard working. We will miss him.

December 20, 2014

Earthly words cannot express the thoughts for today. None of us realized it at the time, but Neil was a special gift sent from heaven to teach us all the true meaning of life and love. He never waivered in his thoughts or beliefs. He was true to the end. He loved his friends and family most of all, and demonstrated that until his final breath. He will be celebrating Christmas in heaven, and I'm sure is wishing all of his family/friends peace and good will. His last utterances were of his grandmother and "mind over matter". A true confirmation that life goes on forever! God bless the Smith/King family. They are special! Love to all this holiday season!
