Eddie and I will never forget all the times we went to Choushatta with Nelda. We met Nelda about 10 or so years ago and just loved her. She was so kind and so funny at times. We would sit in the front and she and I would talk all the way there to the casino. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Placker family. We will miss her very much.

I was sort of the baby in the cousin group but always remember the trips to Coleto Creek and how Nelda had the task of keeping me from being washed down the creek. Nelda also had the joy of introducing me to bingo several years later and also had to mark the numbers on my card I missed. God bless you Nelda and say hello to our parents until we are all together again.

Many of my best childhood memories are of being with my cousins. Nelda was our leader. She took care of us and always thought of wonderful things to do. We sang and danced, did acrobatics, built playhouses in the fields, made doll clothes, and designed fashions and hairstyles. Nelda always wanted to make sure that everyone had fun and that no one was left out. As much as Nelda loved her role as leader, she was also a great listener. When we sat out at night under the stars and discussed plans, dreams, and hopes for the future, nothing seemed impossible or too ridiculous.
Life brings changes to us all; at times, reality comes crashing in, but Nelda remained true to her childhood calling. She was there for her friends and family during good times and bad. She would laugh with you or cry--whatever the occasion demanded.
This may sound strange to some, but after Nelda departed from us I was visited by a beautiful butterfly; somehow I knew that this was her way of letting me know that she is happy and still very full of life.

I will never forget all the great times I had with Nelda. She showed me the ropes at CCD Bingo (how to play 3 cards at once while talking and eating chalupas), she was the only partner I could ever dance with (all during LaNeil's wedding-never once complaining that I stepped on her feet), and she didn't even hesitate for one moment to pull over when I got car sick in her new Cadillac. She gave me my first course in Intro to Texas Culture; we bottle-fed calves, went to the DQ in Goliad, did the chicken dance (and the bull**** dance) at family weddings, and Nelda taught my mom (Sheila) and I everything we needed to know about operating heavy machinery in the wilds of Charco. As aspiring artists, Anna, Nelda, my mom, and I turned Sunbelt tees into Southwestern works of art complete with rhinestones, suede, and conchos and made tiny clay ornaments for a Texas Christmas tree at my grandparents' Frankie and Albert's house. In large part thanks to Nelda, this transplanted Texan now gladly calls Victoria home. My love and sympathy goes out to all my cousins and their families. Paige Marasales
