GOLDBERG
NELSON L.
Nelson L. Goldberg, an innovator, pioneer and visionary in the telecommunications industry, died Sunday, September 25, 2005, at the age of 76. Goldberg, the son of the late Edward and Fannie Menzer Goldberg, was a native of New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Arnold High and then Pennsylvania State University in 1956. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Born of humble beginnings in 1930, he led an extraordinary life that touched countless people. Goldberg's career began in radio sales at WKPA-AM in New Kensington. In 1958, Goldberg became General Manager of WKPA and then purchased the station in 1961. Goldberg acquired WYDD-FM in 1963 and operated the radio stations for more than 25 years. WYDD was the first radio station to offer an all jazz format and Goldberg developed and promoted Jazz Horizons, Pittsburgh's first jazz concert series that featured jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and Nina Simone. Goldberg developed WEFB-TV (TV3) and Westmoreland Cable in 1968, one of the first cable franchises in western Pennsylvania. The cable system was later sold to Comcast Corporation. Further establishing himself at the forefront of telecommunications and technology, Goldberg founded Mass Communications and Management and Total Communications Systems (TCS). TCS was at one point heralded as the largest independently owned television production company in the country. Among the company's achievements were the first pay-per-view broadcast of a sporting event (a Penn State vs. Cincinnati football game); syndicated broadcasts of Penn State, Notre Dame and Big Ten football; the first nationally syndicated college football highlight show (The Penn State Story); in 1981, the introduction of the largest and most sophisticated mobile television facility in the industry that was used to televise hundreds of events, including Super Bowls and Olympic broadcasts. He also developed the Meadows Racing Network (now Ladbroke Racing Network). Goldberg's experience in sports broadcasting also led to a secondary career in sports marketing and representation, working with former NFL players such as Tony Dorsett, Jimmy Cefalo, Terry Bradshaw, and Matt Bahr. In the 1980's, Goldberg was the first to privately own satellite transponders and perceptively anticipated the advent of commercial television satellite broadcasting. Throughout his career, he continuously broke ground in developing new kinds of broadcast programming and the manner in which they were transmitted. Goldberg was extremely devoted to his family. He was a member of the former Beth Jacob Synagogue in New Kensington, The New York City Friars Club, and was an active supporter of the United Jewish Federation and Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. In addition to his professional ties to Penn State, Mr. Goldberg was a generous and loyal supporter of the University. He had football season tickets for over 30 years and enjoyed attending games. Mr. Goldberg was married in 1964 to Marsha Gold of Toronto, Ontario. He is the beloved father of Fred Goldberg of Toronto, Ontario, Brad (Lara) Goldberg of Las Vegas, Nevada and Eric (Beth) Goldberg of Pittsburgh; brother of Melvin (Seena) Goldberg of Boca Raton, Florida; grandfather of Addison and Spencer Goldberg and uncle and great uncle to a host of nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Freda Goldberg. Services were held at RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC. 5509 Centre Ave., Shadyside. Interment Beth Jacob Cemetery, New Kensington. The family requests donations be made to: Penn State University, c/o Nelson L. Goldberg Endowed Football Scholarship, 157 Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, PA 16802. 814-865-9462.

Dear Mrs. Goldberg, Freddy, Brad & Eric,

I was so saddened to hear about Mr. Goldberg and wished I could have been with you at this very difficult time.

I have to tell all of you just how much your family and your friendships have always meant to me.

Even though I don't speak to Brad, Eric or Freddy that frequently, I am always thinking about all three of you, years & years of incredible and countless memorable times together and really have to thank all of you for always being such good guys and never having a dull moment ever in your company.

Brad - I will call you soon in LV just to see how you are.

I have years of indelible memories of all five of you and that incredible weekend when I was fortunate enough to actually come visit with you in Fox Chapel - the beer pong still stings...but I'll get over it. Just one thing to settle from B8, Brad, I still think my Dad's Nikon on Vistor's Day was a 'bit' bigger than your Dad's ;)

Lastly, any parent, especially your Dad, could not be anything except exceptionally proud, blessed and comforted to have 3 incredibly, bright, talented and gifted sons.

You all honour his memory.

I hope to see you in the near future.

With heartfelt sympathy to you all & warmest regards,

Mark Redhill

Dear Eric, Brad and Fred,

Eric knows I had been attempting for some time to get "home" to Pittsburgh to say goodbye to my dear friend, Nelson. He was a very special person to me and my family and greatly influenced my young life in many ways, especially giving me confidence in myself and my abilities. He was unique in every way...a true visionary, a kind and supportive friend. It's hard to believe that was almost forty years ago. The memories are as vivid as if it was yesterday. I will miss just knowing he is "there" for me as he always was. Our sincere condolenses to you and your families.

Sincerely,

Diane (Devlin), Alan, Lianne and Jessica Gordon

So sorry to hear of Nelson's passing. He always offered me encouragement and enjoyed my 'on-air' work at his stations. Spending 25 years in radio was a great experience, but my best years were with Nelson at 'KPA and 'YDD. Great times. Thank you Mr. Goldberg.

My sincere sympathy to the family of Nelson. As a parttime employee of TCS years ago, Nelson was a friend as well as the boss. He was always looking for the perfect show. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy for Marsha and the boys. Having worked for Nelson for more than 8 years, he filled my life with memories that live on. Oh the stories that would fill a library and our eyes with tears of laughter. Thank you Nelson.

Nelson was such a positive influence in my life. Not only did he believe in me, but he taught me to believe in myself and gave me the gift to dream of possibilities. I will truly miss him. My heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Nelson educated us in the arts of dreaming big, touching other peoples lives, and sharing everything he had. His life was important and his influence lives on in his children and friends. We are all very sorry for your loss.

Nelson touched so many hearts and his kind words were always short and easy to speak, but their echoes were truly endless. May God be with your family and friends in this time of sadness.

Nelson was a special person and had a positive influence on many people. He probably never knew how many lives he touched and how helpful he was to the young people who worked for him. He certainly left his mark on many of us at Penn State --students, staff, and administrators. I will never forget the Century of Excellence celebrations and the wonderful times we had throughout the years. He was always there to lend a hand and his exuberance and energy were infectious. I will miss him, but the memories of the good times we shared will always remain.

I was so saddened to read of Nelson's passing. When Nelson started Jazz Horizons many years ago, I was a very young girl who

was getting introduced to Modern

Jazz (having grown up singing Dixieland). Nelson gave me my very

first Jazz job in Pittsburgh opening

the show for the world famous vibist, Cal Tjader. I will never

ever forget that he had such faith

in me. I haven't had the opportunity to talk to him for a

couple of years now. But, I will

never forget Nelson or his brother,

Herb. What great guys they were.

My regards to his family.
