Nicholas Cumberland Obituary
He graduated from Memorial Drive Elementary School in 2009, Spring Branch Middle in 2012, and as Valedictorian, Class Vice President, and Cheerleader of Memorial High School in 2016. He was a junior in the Business Honors Program and Radio Television and Film School at The University of Texas at Austin (a triple major with a minor).
He was passionate about film, public speaking, broadcasting, snow skiing, rugby, football, biking, hiking, international travel, diverse cultures, history and playing the ukulele. Nicky was a member of the Tau Chapter of Kappa Sigma and a member of Young Life. He was a committee member of Genesis, Chase the World, and Student Consulting Initiative, and a member of Texas Cowboys, National Outdoor Leadership School, and UT Cheer.
Nicky is most frequently remembered for his genuine compassion and service to others in need of a friend, his warm playful sense of humor, his creativity, and his quest for knowledge and greater understanding. Nicky was extremely proud of his dual nationalities and Chinese-Western heritages; he coined his own nickname "Panda".
The romantic in Nicky blossomed when he met his soul-mate, Clio Harralson. Two adventurous and silly spirits, they inspired and supported each other for the past two years.
Nicky was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dorothy Cumberland; grandfather, ShengKang Wang; uncle, Scott Cumberland; and beloved dogs -- Simba and Cher. He is survived by his mother Sylvia Wang Xiao Qing Cumberland and father Shawn Cumberland; his sister, Alexandra Cumberland; brother, Danny Cheung; grandmothers, Ping Wang and Bobann Cumberland; grandfather, Willard Cumberland; and uncles, Brian Cumberland and ex-wife Kristen, Lance Cumberland and his wife Molly, Wayne Cumberland and his wife Fran and his aunt Brendi Cumberland, Jing Wang, and Miao Wang; and numerous cousins in the US and China.
Friends and family are welcome to attend the memorial service, officiated by Dr. John Stephens, on Saturday, November 3 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street, Houston. Following that, there will be a celebration of life from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a new UT scholarship fund set up in Nicky's honor.

I am heartbroken to learn of Nickys passing. He was such a kind-hearted smart boy. I loved teaching both he and his big sister, Alexandra. What a special family. Nicky Cumberland did not have any friends. Well, it's more accurate to say that he did not have any just regular friends. Instead, he had countless "special friends." As someone fortunate enough to be a professor in one of Nicky's classes, I have spoken to many, many of his classmates here in the Business Honors Program at UT. Virtually every single one of them describes their friendship with Nicky as "special." Nicky was just one of those people who lit up the room and made everyone who came in contact with him feel better about life. And if you were his friend, he made you feel like a special friend, not just a plain vanilla friend or acquaintance. That was Nicky's super power and one of the reasons so many miss him so much.

Although we did not know him well, we know and love the Harralsons and saw how much they loved Nicky, especially precious Clio whom we've known since she was 4 yrs old. We are all grieving with you over your loss of Nicky. I prayed so hard for him to come back into the fullness of life, and I know that 100s, perhaps 1,000s did. There is no reason we can grasp that brings comfort. It doesnt make it any easier to accept, but I do know that Nicky is in perfection in the glory of God in Heaven now, and that one day we can all join him there.
