Nicholas (Nick) Drees Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2011.
Nick Drees, of Ankeny, Iowa, was born on December 27, 1962 at Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa to James H. and Patricia J. Ramsey Drees. Nick passed from this life on October 10, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Downtown Des Moines Mercy Medical Center Campus in the East Tower Auditorium (Use East Tower Entrance).
Nick grew up on the farm near Manning and attended Manning Community Schools, graduating in 1981 as the class valedictorian. In 1985, Nick graduated with honors from Harvard University. He was a member of the United Community Housing Coalition for a year, serving in Detroit, Michigan. There, he did landlord tenant counseling for the poor. He then attended the University of Chicago Law School graduating in 1989.
From 1989 to 1991, Nick served as a law clerk to Honorable Donald E. O'Brein, U.S. District Court for Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, Sioux City. Nick then went to work as an assistant public defender at the Polk County Public Defender's office in Des Moines. He worked there from 1991 to 1994. From 1994 to present, Nick worked for the Federal Public Defender's Office for Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, Des Moines. He served as an assistant federal defender from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he became the federal defender, serving as head of the agency's four offices in Iowa and representing clients in federal court. He continued in this position until the time of his death.
Throughout his career, Nick was active with the national ACLU, the ACLU of Iowa serving as a member of the board of directors and holding several offices, American Constitution Society, and Iowans Against the Death Penalty. He also served on the Harvard Schools and Scholarships Committee for Central Iowa as a member since 1992 and as chair since 1999.
Nick dedicated his career to criminal defense work. He believed very deeply that the American system of justice was best served by providing vigorous legal advocacy for the less fortunate. He believed that each person deserved to be treated fairly and with dignity and respect, and his life's work reflected his commitment and compassion and equal justice for all. He was a respected and beloved member of the state and federal legal community.
Nick was united in marriage with Edith Dawn Myer in Manning, Iowa on August 29th, 1986. They have three children, Jonathan, a student at Iowa State University, and twin daughters, Abigail and Kaitlyn, at home.
Nick is survived by his wife and children and his parents Jim and Pat Drees of Manning, Iowa; brothers Jeff and wife Gail of Austin, Texas, and Jay and wife Maureen of Manning Iowa; parents-in-law Dr. P.L. and Janet Myer of Manning, Iowa; sisters-in-law Beth and Mike Hill of Manning, Iowa, Dr. Barbara and Bret Hodne of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jean and Scott Schwiesow also of Ankeny, Iowa; and nieces and nephews: Nate Drees and wife Melissa of Austin, Texas, James Drees of Austin, Texas, Danielle Drees of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Laura and Jessica Hill, Nick, Ryan, and Ashley Hodne, and Chelsea and Blake Schwiesow all of Ankeny, Iowa.
Nick was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Drees and maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Mayburn Ramsey.
Nick fought a courageous nine month battle with anaplastic thyroid cancer under the care of Mercy cancer specialists, the Mayo Clinic, and the National Cancer Institute. On this journey, he was an inspiration to all who knew him. The love and support expressed to Nick by family, friends, and colleagues during his illness touched him and his family deeply. He felt grateful and honored to be cared for by so many wonderful people.
Nick was humble about his many accomplishments, but he was very proud of his twenty-five year marriage to the love of his life, Edie, and of being the father of Jon, Abby, and Kate.

To the family of Nick Drees,
Although I only worked for Nick for two short years at the Federal Defenders' Office, I wanted to let you know what a tremendous impact Nick has had on my life. I was able to observe his intelligence, kindness, gentleness, toughness, and humanity, all while he struggled with such overwhelming (for others) responsibility. While I will never attain Nick's level of these qualities, he inspired me to try. I truly feel indebted to Nick for showing me how things could and should be and for what I have been able to achieve in my life and career. This world is a lesser place without him, but heaven has gained a giant. Please accept my sincere sympathies for your loss.

I had the joy and privilege of sharing Nick's time and the brilliance of his advocacy during the years in a number of federal criminal trials as well as un-numbered professional hours with him outside of court. There is no person who was kinder, more generous, friendlier or happier. His sterling personal qualities, standards, ideals and beliefs have truly made the world a better place for all who had the joy of knowing him. His flawless professional work benefited the outcomes of all he represented, but his example and teaching of others has truly improved and furthered the system of justice for all. Many people have high ideals, but few live their ideals and share them as effectively as Nick. The world is a better place because of his life, and all who were privileged to know him share the loss of his passing. One wishes there were words to reflect the esteem all who knew or worked with Nick held him in.

Dear Mrs. Drees and Family:
Sometimes in one's life ,one meets an exceptional and beautiful soul who gently but steadily guide us, inspire us,and gracefully teach us many lessons along the way. Nick was such a spirit and a light to me personally and to so many of us who had the rare privilege and honor to work and learn from him at ACLU-IA Board of Directors. Please accept my deepest sympathy to you all for this most difficult loss of such a magnificent human being.

I am deeply saddened over the loss of Nick. I have shared the pictures and stories of Nick with my kids. I can only hope that my younger kids have as great experience in school because of someone like Nick. My only comfort is knowing that Nick and Mr. Hanley will now have projects to share and complete in heaven. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Nick's family and friends.

Having been a public defender for years, I know how rare it is to find someone who truly believes that fighting for the rights of the accused makes us all more free. While I did not know Nick personally, I know from others that he believed this, and that a kinder and gentler man may not have trod upon this earth. My condolences to his family, his friends, and those he will no longer defend.

I distinctly recall following with Nick the Watergate scandal as it unfolded when we were 9 or 10 years old in Mrs. Ohde's fifth grade class in Manning. I will miss Nick's wit. I tried matching wits with him on numerous occasions only to fail miserably. Sometimes he have to explain it until I 'got it' due to it being above my head. I loved his mastery of the English language. I could read anything he wrote. It was filled with the most precise words and he just had a way in relaying his thoughts that were second to none. i will miss Nick. Edie, I am thinking of you and your family.

Nick was a courageous and tireless warrior for the less fortunate. With his exceptional education, skill, and experience he could have made millions practising law for a firm or corporation. Instead, he dedicated his entire professional life to being a passionate defender of the Constitution for those who could not afford to hire counsel. It was a calling not a job for Nick and he preformed it with unparalleled grace and dignity. His eyes would always twinkle brightly when asked about his wife and children - his first priority and love. There simply are not enough adjectives to describe what a caring and wonderful human being Nick was. He is gone but will never be forgotten.
