Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Nicholas M. Skinner US Marine Private 1st Class. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. Dear Laura and Rick,

It's been almost seven years. Nick was an outstanding Marine and one hell of a fighter. It was an honor to serve with him. He and Alex are in my thoughts daily. I only hope that what we accomplish in our lives will be something that would honor them. I don't know if anyone still checks this site, but please email me any time at [email protected]

God Bless.

In Memory of Nicholas ~ (Debra Estep)

August 27, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nicholas, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Randy, laura, steph, and ray,
It hurt me so much when i heard of nicks death i was very close to nick i went to school with him from kindergarten to ninth grade, we even kept contact after i moved all the way up til a few days before he left for iraq. i have special love for him and always will. i go and visit him at his grave at least a couple times a week i just cant believe how his life was takn so short but i guess thats how life is i sure wish it wasn't. I am engaged to his very best friend matthew Davis and we always sit and talk about nick and how he loved his life of fishing, hunting, and knife collecting, oh and ya cant forget the guns. Things would of been different for me if he would have came home because he talked to me about getting together when he came home but we did talk alot before his death and i will always cherish that in my heart for as long as i live. we were always so close throughout all those years and i just wish i could go back for a little while to see his smile and hear that laugh of his my thoughts and prayers are always with all of you and there isn't one day that goes by that i dont think of him i had a special bond with him and that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

I am so sorry for you loss. I had the great fortune and priviledge of serving with Nick through boot camp together. We were squad leaders together and then he was my guide! He was a caring and strong leader that had genuine concern for those around him without sacrificing his strength nor his will. I had the utmost respect for him and he was truly an inspiration in my marine coprs career. He reminded me of exactly my older brother and i looked up to him the same way. I was so struck when i discovered his sacrifice. He is in my prayers, memories, and thoughts.
I will tell my children and thier children on the great man and inspiration that was Pfc. Nick Skinner. An amazing marine and even better friend!

July 27, 2007

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

To Laura and Family,
Its been almost three years since we have lost our loved one and we all miss him deeply. when i first met nick i was a sophmore in highschool and he didnt even know me but yet would still talk to me and try to get me to hang out with him. i always said no because i was so shy and he wasnt. My junior year he was my parter for drivers ed. my real parter had dropped out of class so he volunteered to be my partner during his study hall. he was always so considerate of others. I also had math class with him that year and he finally got me to break out of my shell. i was always very shy but he always made me laugh and i had such a great time with him in class. i worked at maid rite with his mom and sister so he always came in to see them and i enjoyed every minute of his time. I miss you nick very much and i will be thinking of you on this memeorial day as you thought of us while you were fighting for your country. I am so glad that i got to be a part of your life and thank you for always being there for me when i needed you. You were an awesome friend.we had alot of good times together and i wish that i could of said goodbye before you went i regret that but i know you are walking with God and watching over all of us. We love you nick and you will always be with me in my heart.

I grew up around Nick Skinner i didnt know that he had enlisted till the day a very close family friend had showed up at my front door and i had asked her Why she was crying.. She said that it was Nick and from the look in her eyes i knew that i was going to need to sit down to hear the news about this one... She told me that he was wounded i a battle in Iraq and he didnt survive it. I immediately took her into my arms and cried with her, not because i felt bad, because i knew noone would ever meet him again. But my wishs are with his family and all the people that were blessed to know him as i was.. I will never forget seeing the kid that Loved Halloween, skateboarding with out his shirt and just all arround having Fun! God Bless You!

There are so many momories that I have of Nick. He was always there when I needed him in high school. We had alot of laughs when we were in elementry and middle. He was the first guy to ever ask me out of course it was in sixth grade. He was still always nice to me. I miss him and will always miss him. I know that he is watching over my little sister as she serves in the army. He is the truest of true heros and we will always miss him. I can only hope that I can come back someday to Iowa just to say hi. We all miss you so very much Nick.

I am very proud of your son and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be where I am today in the US Army as a medic. Your son gave me the courage I needed to join. Your son was very brave and courageous.

To the parents of PFC Skinner:

I never knew a PFC Skinner; I knew Nick Skinner, the kid that always got in trouble with me in 3rd period speech class for goofing off all the time. It was at West High, I was a freshman and him a sophmore. From when I first met him, he struck me as a goofy kid that just liked to have fun. After that class, I heard he transfered to North. About 6 months later, I was working at my job; I was a cook at Harlan's Fine Foods, and here comes Nick walking though the back door. I trained him in the back to be a cook. And as in class, we had a lot of fun back in the kitchen goofing around. After he left, I never heard anything else of him. Here I am, years later, sitting in my barracks at Camp Pendleton. I'm a Marine with 1st Recon Bn. I was looking through a paper not too long ago, and in it was a list of names of Marines killed in Iraq. I just skimmed through, and just stopped on a name. I was shocked. There in print it said "PFC Nicholas M. Skinner." I couldn't believe it. I looked it up and did some research, and still can't believe it. I was in my 3rd week of bootcamp on the deate it happened. I never even knew he joined the corps. My sincere condolences to you and your family. He was, and still is a great guy. He could always make me laugh no matter what. As he stands up there guarding the streets of heaven, I can only be glad that I knew and worked next to a great guy, a great friend. He has paid the ultimate sacrafice for his brothers and his country, and others continue to do the same. I am very sorry for your loss. God bless and Semper Fidelis.

To the family of Pfc. Nicholas M. Skinner:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. During the most trying times with my son in Iraq, I try very hard to

hold on to what he always tells me about my fear. Other times I just

hang on to "The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusts

in Him and I am helped."

Jason has always advised: "Mom, I am a United States Marine. I

serve my country with great pride and confidence. Marines believe

they will die when their time is up here - when God needs us for

other things. I like to think like being Guardian Angels over other

Marines still in the fight. If I don't come home to give you a hug,

please hold on to the fact that I'd be gone to a better place and I'd

be holding your hand the whole time to help you through your grief

for me. I am not afraid to die and I don't want you to be afraid

either. Hold on to pride and dignity - that's the way I try to live

my life".

Our deepest sympathy for your loss.

Dear family,

Please accept this note as my sincere condolence for the loss of your Marine, PFC Nick Skinner. He was truly one of The Few, The Proud. You can be sure of that. Nick was part of my son's 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. My son was able to attend your son's memorial in Iraq. I have some pictures of the service, if you are interested.

I can’t say I understand what you’re going through, but I can ask God to give you comfort and peace during this horrible time. I ask Him to bless your home with friends who can listen and hold your hand.

I’m so sorry you have to go through this. From all I read, Nick was a strong young man, doing his job so valiantly for our nation. What an honor it must be to know him personally. Stateside or across the ocean, these Marines serve our country with such courage and bravery.

Please know that I will be praying for you. I wish I had more comforting words to say.

To the family and friends of Nicholas M. Skinner,

My mother called me earlier this morning to ask me if I knew Nicholas. After I asked why, she read me the article. Nicholas happens to be the cousin of a close friend of the family. Although I personally had never met Nicholas, I can say he was a very couragous young man. Unfortunately, he made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedoms along with many other service members. If Nick was anything like the rest of us service members, he went to Iraq following his heart and his beliefs. For this we should lift our heads with pride and place him forever in our prayers. Thank you for such a wonderful young man! Trust that he will never be forgotten. Your family is in my prayers. Take Care and remember..."Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take...But by the number of times life takes our breath away." With deepest sympathy, Amanda L. To Nick's family and many friends -

Nick was a special friend that we met through our daughter Tessa. We always referred to him as "Cowboy Nick" because he was always wearing that cowboy hat almost every time he came over. He and Tessa had a very special "friendship" and we enjoyed all the times he would stop by our house to visit and the many times he went with Tessa to her Grandma's house to eat. He had an infectious smile that melted your heart. Tessa has everlasting memories of all the fun that she has had with Nick over the years, and especially all the time they spent together when he and Stephen were home on leave. As God chose to take Nick home with him, he joined many families together to create an eternal bond. How comforting it is that Stephen was there with Nick in his last moments and that Stephen's parents came to your side to join with you as you laid your son Nick to rest. Tessa and Stephen will continue their friendship.....with Nick forever engrained in their hearts. God bless you all and may you find peace in the comfort of your loving family and many friends.

Randy, Laura and Family,

It truly saddens our hearts to know that your son Nick gave his life while serving his country. Without ever knowing him I know he was a great young man as he cared enough to enlist in the Marine’s knowing he would be deployed to Iraq to keep our country a safe place to live. You are in our prayers daily and please find peace and comfort knowing that God is with him. He was truly a brave and courageous man and I feel saddened that I did not have the honor of knowing him. There’s a wonderful peace in just knowing that God never leaves us alone. May God continue to bless you all in this most difficult time.

To the Skinner Family,

It may seem odd to receive a message from a stranger at a time like this but I feel compelled to write a quick note. Our daughter and grandson recently lost a US Marine Corpsman special to them -- Sgt. Matthew Adams (husband and father) who died July 25, 2004 in a training accident while his company was getting ready to deploy to Iraq. Matt was a tow gunner. It was a painful experience for his parents, siblings, our daughter, our grandson, our family and so many of their young friends from the Alleman Class of 1995.

We now know the meaning behind the saying "freedom is not free." May you find comfort in knowing that Nick is sitting in a comfortable foxhole with God now, safe and blessed with an eternal reward. No doubt he, too, was one of the few and the proud.

To family and friends of Nick: I would like to tell you how sorry I am to hear about Nick's death. I have known Nick for a long time and was blessed with the oppurtunity to be close to him. I knew Nick from school and he always went out of his way to talk to me and make sure I was having a good day. Nick was one of the kindest people I have ever had the opportunity to know. He was always thinking of others before he ever thought of himself. I used to talk to him on the phone, sometimes for hours about school, life, and of course his family. He would stop by my house some days and we would just sit and talk out on the porch. There was something about Nick that made him different. I don't know whether it was his blatant honesty or his love for other people, but he was a special person. He was very important to me and I want you to know how much I will miss him and that I will never forget what a great person he was.

Dear Laura Randy and Family: Our daughter Mindy was a friend and classmate of Nick's. He would stop by the house and they would sit outside on the stoop and talk. He was always a so nice to her and always a gentleman. When Mindy was not at home he would just sit and talk with Bernie while he worked in the garage. He called for Mindy when he was in California at basic training but she was away at school, at the time playing softball somewhere down south and it breaks our hearts that she didn't have that last chance to talk with him. He gave everything to all of us and we will forever be grateful. Our prayers and love are with you. My Daughter, Becca Lewandowski graduated from North Scott High School in 2003 with Nick and they were good friends. She thought the world of Nick. On behalf of my Daughter Becca and I, our heart felt condolences go out to the Family. Words cannot express the sacrifice that Nick and his Family have made for our freedom. Becca's Brother recently retuned from Iraq; a Paratrooper with the Army's 82nd Airborne and myself an Army Viet Nam combat veteran, understand the sacrificies that our Sons, Daughters and Families make in times like this. Nick and his Family will always have a special place in our heart. Nick will not be forgotten for his bravery, his unselfishness to proudly serve his country and the sacrifice that he has made for all of us so that we can enjoy the freedoms and quality of life that we all are grateful for. Our prayers and thoughts will always be with Nick and his family especially at this difficult time.

My family and I are deeply saddend by the loss of your loved one and friend. I have known Nick and his family for 14 years. My daughter Kara attended classes at North Scott with Nick and my daughter Holly attended classes at North Scott with Nick's sister Stephanie. Stephanie was also a member of my Girl Scout Troop along with Holly. Holly worked a part-time job under the supervision of Nick's mother Laura. We have the fondest memories of Nick and his family. It seemed like it was not that long ago when Nick was just a young man in grade school. Out going but shy Nick visited our home on several occasions to leave off gifts for Kara. I can recall when that same sensitive young man was shopping with his little sister Elizabeth and youngest brother Dexter. One of the children was on his shoulders while he held onto the hand of the other. I was mesmerized by the love and kindness he shared with his family and friends. You are in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you all and give you the courage to understand God's plan and to live out Nick's dreams. Jeannie Mirfield
