NICHOLAS VERGIS Obituary
NICHOLAS T.
Age 90, of Dormont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, with his family at his side. Born in Karpathos, Greece, on September 10, 1922 to the late Catherine (Philippides) and Athanasios Vergis. Beloved husband of Sophia (Petritis) Vergis; loving father of Eugenia and Emanuel Vergis. During his career, Nick was a waiter at the Ankara night club, Carlton House and Park Schenley. He loved his craft as evident by the many letters of commendation. Although he came to the States as a young man, he never forgot his roots, traditions and culture. Nick was an enthusiast of traditional Karpathian music and wrote folksongs. He was a member of St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Union Local 57, and KEPA (West Virginia and Pittsburgh chapters). Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, (www.freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Thursday, February 14 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., where a Trisagion Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Friday, February 15 in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. Interment Homewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, UPMC Montefiore, 3459 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or St. Nicholas Cathedral.
