Nicola Garnett/St. John Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province on Mar. 31, 2006.
GARNETT / ST. JOHN _ Nicola Jane Niki enjoyed chocolate, friends and laughter. After showing how a person can be incredibly courageous, determined and inspirational Niki lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, March 30, 2006. She will be sadly missed by her husband Bruce St. John, son Jack, daughter Georgia, and Australian family, parents Patrick and Patricia, brother Richard (Pieta), sister Sarah (Rick) and her nephews and nieces Adrian, Jeremy, Bronwyn, Tommy, Louis, Eliza and her extended family in Canada, Diane and Bill St. John and sister-in-law Karen Carmichael (Peter) and nieces Paige and Sophie and her closest friends who Niki considered family. The family would like to give thanks to all of Niki's caregivers at the cancer agency, palliative care unit, and homecare nurses who have been unbelievably supportive to her during her 9 year struggle with cancer. They would especially like to thank Karen Gelmon for her incredible compassion and support that gave Niki the ability and will to fight for so long. A celebration of Niki's life will take place Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 3:00 pm at Ryerson United Church, 2195 W. 45th Ave (at Yew St.), Vancouver, British Columbia. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.

I was privileged to have met and worked with Niki at Kerrisdale Elementary School Annex where she was my teaching partner for a short time. I enjoyed her wonderful smile, accent and energy, and admired and appreciated her dedication to meeting the learning needs of our students. She was special and will be missed by all who knew her as I did.

I met Niki at the Arbutus Club years ago while our children were taking swimming lessons.I still remember how funny she was the first time we met .She would always stop to say hello .I saw her last fall walking the dyke in Southlands one morning and knew she wasn't well .She was so strong and up even in sickness. She was a very warm person and I'm glad I knew her . Be strong in her memory .
