Nina Petropolis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 1 to Jan. 4, 2023.
PETROPOLIS, Nina - Passed away December 8, 2022 suddenly. Our beloved "Thea" Nina was born on December 10th, 1952, in the old Halifax Infirmary, daughter to Nicholas and Vivian Petropolis. Thea is survived by her siblings, Dr. Peter N. Petropolis (Joy Park Petropolis), Dr. Chris Petropolis (Ann Petropolis) and Angela Petropolis (Jim Duff) as well as her nieces and nephews Dr. Nicholas Petropolis (Katie Marsh), Dr. Christian Petropolis (Dr. Andrea Petropolis), Dr. Harrison Petropolis (Katherine Petropolis), Dr. Arielle Petropolis, Theo Petropolis, Zachary Petropolis, Alex Petropolis, Graham Petropolis Duff and Vivienne Petropolis Duff. Thea never married nor had children but shared significant love with her long-time friend Leroy Roy.

Her tenacity and drive were evidenced early on, while she spent many years working alongside her family at the Cameo restaurant as a hostess, committed to excellence and doing things the old-fashioned way. A true Haligonian, she lived her entire life on Spring Garden Road interacting with people of all facets of life, never missing out on a good conversation. As a fixture of our community, her network was expansive from the Greek church, the Friends of Public Gardens and Spring Garden Road Business Association. Never seen without an elegant hat, her dignified ways were an ode to her mother who impressed the importance of formal wear on her children.

Nina was no stranger to hard work and was proud of her 37-year tenure at Canada Post being trusted with the highest security packages. A product of her generation, she never took vacation, craving the social aspect of work, but also not wanting to miss her specials at Johnny's Snack (try the seafood platter). After retiring from the post office, she proceeded to work alongside her brother Dr. Chris Petropolis in his dental office until her last day. Patients knew her well from the frequent phone reminders and lively office conversation.

Nina's hobbies included frequenting the Public Gardens gazebo concert series, Athens Restaurant and Pete's Frootique for sales on produce and bread. She rarely strayed away from Halifax but sought tremendous joy during 2010 partaking in the trip of a lifetime to Greece with her nephew Nicholas and wife Katie, committed to research of our family's ancestry and staying true to her roots.

Above all else, Thea's commitment was her family, her biggest source of pride. Relishing every accomplishment of her nieces and nephews, while being there for them during hardships was evidenced through her daily after work phone calls reminders about local events, best deals on gas prices and gifts she picked up for us. Her classic line was, "I won't keep you long, but I love and miss you honey". We will all miss this caring reminder of love.

Whenever we visit Spring Garden Road the image of our Thea waving with a big smile will always be in our hearts.

No visitation by request and private burial will take place at a later date. In Lieu of flowers please consider donations to Spencer House or St. George's Greek Orthodox Church

I am so very sorry for your loss. I knew Nina as Cathy when we went to Tower Road School. She was a good friend and so very sorry we lost touch over the years. May you all know that she is now your angel and will be watching over you in the years to come. RIP Cathy. Heather Pitman

I worked at Canada Post and remember her dearly. I frequently had to pick up registered packages and there she was, always smiling and did she ever love to talk. She was a kind soul and I know heaven has another Angel. My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. Rest easy Nina.
