He was the youngest child of Kathleen and Patrick, brother to June (D), Patrick, Raphael, Georgina and Christopher and uncle of several nieces and nephews. His many dear friends will also mourn his loss, and will miss him always, as will his longtime readers and colleagues in the newsroom of the London Free Press.

By chance I saw Noel's obituary today and was so sad to hear of his passing. I knew Noel for many years starting in London when I wrote to him at the Free Press about a movie review. I treasured being able to talk with him so many years later even after I moved away and hear that quick wit and easy laugh. Noel was one of a kind. I will miss him.

I was shocked to find out about Noel's passing today. My condolences to his family. He would talk of you often in our phone calls. I met Noel in London in my first year in Canada after coming from Northern Ireland and I think we bonded on our shared ancestry.
Although I moved to Vancouver many years ago he would always make sure we kept in touch. He will be missed by myself and many more.

I had lost touch with Noel a number of years ago, but I often thought about him and our friendship way back when I worked at the London Free Press. Those were good times for us as I had known Noel right from the get go in the early seventies and we often shared Sunday mornings in London playing touch football, something Noel was very keen on. One of my favourite things about Noel was how he loved the neurotic behaviour of film star Woody Allen, often fashioning his own behaviour after him. I still laugh to myself when I think about Noel making fun of me for wearing driving gloves while driving us to an assignment in my Volkswagen, Noel said he had never seen anyone do that, but the truth of the matter was I was still getting over no longer driving a little red British TR6.When I found out Noel had passed I was deeply saddened by the news, but one thing that helped me remember a long lost friend and truly unique individual was a photo of a group of us all wearing crazy hats piled on one another on a bed in my apartment. Don't worry everyone was clothed, the occasion being my daughter Renee's Christening . NOEL I'll miss you my Friend.

Noel and I met in our third year at Loyola College. I remember him, and none of you will believe this, as being a quiet shy fellow. Slowly we became friends, at which point I realised that the whole quiet shy thing must have been a cover!
Then we went to St. Joseph's Teacher's College together and formed a circle of four friends Noel, myself, Dan and Maureen.
After that we all took teaching positions and went our own ways.
The last time I actually saw Noel was at my wedding in 1976 and then I moved to the UK, but we have always kept up and indeed he phoned me about six weeks ago, when we had a political discussion, may I say mutual rant, about the forthcoming U.S. elections.
This is a terrible shock for us all but the memories we have of Noel will always be with us. He will be always with us: good people always are.
With much love to all of Noel's friends and family. He loved you all so much,
Barbara Ann Jones, nee Payne.

Noel and I met when at age 12, he and his family moved to Clifton ave in NDG (Montreal). We quickly became the best of friends. (It's true that the best friends you'll ever have are the ones you make when you're 12). For several years we did so much together, usually including his brother Chris, and Dan Kennedy.

Noel was my best man when I married Nancy. Life intervened and we found ourselves living in different cities. Nancy and I were extremely shocked and saddened when Chris called with the devastating news. It had only been a couple of days ago that Noel and I shared one of our regular phone conversations.

Noel - you were my best friend and I'm sure the best I'll ever have.

To the Gallagher family - my deepest condolences. It was only recently that Noel and I were talking about his Mom and Dad and the immense love and respect that he had for them.

I was very sorry when Georgina called me with the news of Noel’s sudden passing and he’s been on my mind ever since. I first met him in the fall of 1973 when we both attended the Journalism Graduate Program at the University of Western Ontario. We found common ground in our mutual love of classic movies and film history and our similarly bent senses of humour. After graduation in 1974, I returned to Western Canada to work in television and he settled in London as a newspaperman at the London Free Press. But we kept in touch, usually by phone, despite my constant urging that he buy himself a computer. But with his Irish gift of the gab, he was more at home on the phone, where he did most of the gabbing, often with the staccato rhythm and patter of a stand-up comedian, and I will miss that. I am sending my condolences to his family and to everyone who misses him today, myself included.

I'll remember Noel for his amazingly quick wit, his big heart, and the kind of quirky personality that makes a newsroom such an unforgettable workplace. Rest in peace, Noel.

Noel and I were good friends in our late teens and twenties. As a matter of fact, we hitch-hiked across Canada together in our early twenties and spent several vacation summers in Europe thereafter. Noel was a terrific companion - witty and adventurous. I have nothing but fond memories of him and am saddened by his passing. Condolences to his family, and particularly to Chris whom I also remember as our designated driver on camping trips to the Eastern Townships.

Noel was a good friend during my teaching years at LCCHS. I enjoyed the years we played on the same broomball team. I can definitely say that Noel was a positive influence in my life. Rest In Peace my friend.

All the world's a stage, andallthe men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances . . .

You were the consummate actor, my darling Noel. . . and now, as"there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."

Eloquent, engaging, creative, and original.

Generous, kind, and caring, Noel taught that love transcends.After45 years it is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye my dear friend.

Rest peacefully,

A toast to Noel, an infinitely good man : tirelessly sincere, truthful, trustworthy, generous, eloquent. And passionate in everything he did and with everyone he met. Vividly passionate about his family, his Irishness, his loves, his friends. Vivaciously passionate about movies, and sports in general and hockey and the Habs in particular. Vigorously passionate about words, facts, truth, debates, his job as a reporter, and the chaotic and unreasonable times we are living in. I shall particularly miss his tenderness and his fierceness, his unwavering loyalty, his great sense of humor, his quick and talented repartee, his surprise cards, his weekly phone calls, and the book he never wrote... Forever voyager Noel... My sincerest sympathies to his family and many friends.

When I first arrived at the Free Press I sat beside Noel. There were many laughs and he was very gracious and willing to help a young reporter. RIP Noel.Condolences to his family. He was so proud of his siblings and nieces and nephews.

Noel always seemed to be interested in my film and music projects in London in the 70's, and he did some nice coverage in the Free Press. They have a cherished spot in my scrap book. I'm so sorry to learn that he is no longer with us. But I'm sure he has a prominent place in many scrapbooks and his work will live on and on.
