Norma Graybeal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2025.
Norma Jean Graybeal, 98, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, in La Mesa, California. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she lived a long and full life marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep love for learning.

Born on June 21, 1927, in Taintor, Iowa, Norma Jean grew up during a time of great change in America. She later moved to California, where she graduated from high school in Glendale. Her commitment to education continued as she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University-a testament to her lifelong belief in the power of learning. "Go to school" was her enduring motto, one that she instilled in those around her with unwavering conviction.

Norma Jean married James Graybeal and together they built a family rooted in love and perseverance. Though James and their son Charles Graybeal preceded her in death, Norma Jean's legacy continues through her daughters Karen Hunt and Lynn Burlin; grandchildren William Slater, Jamie Slater, Danielle Bond, and Brian Burlin; and great-grandchildren Marley Helmantoler, Alex Bond, and Brandon Burlin.

Throughout her life, Norma Jean embraced every opportunity to engage with the world around her. She was an avid reader who found joy in books and the knowledge they offered. Her passion for travel took her to new places and experiences that enriched her perspective. A woman of faith and community spirit, she was active in church life and participated enthusiastically in organizations such as the Elks and Masons. She also loved dancing-an expression of joy that reflected her vibrant spirit.

Norma Jean was known for being both caring and hardworking. Her presence brought warmth to those around her, whether through quiet encouragement or steadfast support. Her values live on through the generations she helped raise-each carrying forward a piece of her wisdom and strength.

Mama-you will be missed.
