HAVERHILL — Mr. Norman F. Cohen, 83, of Haverhill and formerly of Salem and Swampscott, died Saturday morning, April 11, 2009 at the Kaplan Hospice House, Danvers.
He was born in Salem, Jan. 17, 1926 son of the late Samuel M. and Gussie (Axelrod) Cohen. Educated in the Salem school system, Mr. Cohen graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1943.
For over 62 years he was employed at Empire Clothing then Susan Bristol, Inc., from where he retired in 1998 as Vice President of Operations. He was a member of Temple Shalom since 1951 where Mr. Cohen was a past President, Vice President and Treasurer as well as Life Director. He was also a member of Temple Emanu-El, Haverhill.
Mr. Cohen was a Life Member of Mt. Carmel Lodge A.F. &A.M., Past Master of Mt. Sinai Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Shriners. He was the husband of the late Freda (Segal) Cohen who died in 2004 and brother of the late Julian Cohen who died in 1979.
His survivors include three sons, Bruce and his wife Diane Cohen of Nashua, N.H., Marvin Cohen of Milford, James Cohen and his wife Wendy Way Cohen of Swampscott; two daughters, Laurie Cohen of Marblehead, Sherri Cohen-Griffeth and her husband Gerry of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Shirley Green of Sharon; three grandchildren, Ben and his wife Meghan Cohen of Waltham, Lindsey Cohen of New York, Olivia Robson of Swampscott, and many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the graveside service Monday at 11 a.m. in Temple Shalom Congregation Sons of Jacob Cemetery, Danvers. A Memorial Observance will be held at the home of James and Wendy Way Cohen on Monday following the service until 8 p.m. and continuing on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Temple Shalom, 278 Lafayette St., Salem, MA 01970, or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral homes, Haverhill and Bradford. Condolences to his family may be made at www.farmerfuneralhomes.com.
