Norman Franks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 22 to Jul. 23, 2012.
CALAIS - Norman Paul Franks, 74, of Lightning Ridge Road, Calais, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Marshfield.

Norman was born on February 27, 1938, in Marshfield, Vt., the son of Douglas Charles Franks Sr. and Ruth Angie (Holt) Franks.

Norman attended schools in Marshfield and graduated in 1956 from Marshfield High School. After graduation, he served in the Vermont Army National Guard.

Norman was known to many as "Hot Dog." He worked at various jobs in the area, including Goddard College, Bailey Brothers, and for several years, he owned and operated the "Go-Go Gas" station on the Barre Montpelier Road. Although he had many different jobs and occupations throughout his life, his real love was working on the farm. Norman enjoyed volunteering his time to "Wheels" to drive seniors to doctor appointments or other events.

Norman loved spending time with family, friends and especially his nieces and nephews. He also had a love for the outdoors. He spent endless time at his camp on Groton Lake. He also loved hunting, fishing and camping. He loved to spend some of the winter months camping in Florida and visiting relatives.

He was also often seen walking along or driving the old railroad bed in Marshfield watching for moose and other wildlife. He enjoyed humming birds as they passed by his windows. Norman also loved spending time with Gordon Holt, his cousin and best friend since childhood.

Norman is survived by his wife, Lois Jewett, whom he married in Marshfield on December 7, 1956; daughter, Debra Franks and her companion Robert Whyte of Hartland, Vt.; son, Stephen Franks and his wife Hope of Plainfield; three grandchildren, Matthew Whyte, Dillion and Jacki Franks.

He is also survived by three sisters, Lucinda Felch of South Barre, Linda Lamberton of Plainfield and Edith Dunkling of Marshfield; three brothers, Robert Franks of East Montpelier, Douglas Franks Jr. of Gilford, N.H., and William Franks of Marsfield; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Ruth Franks; sister, Ruby Smith; and grandson, Michael DeRinzo.

Calling hours will be Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service will be offered at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church, Route 2, Plainfield. Burial will follow the service in Plainmont Cemetery.
