Norman KEITH Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Dec. 30, 2016 to Jan. 4, 2017.
KEITH, Norman Blair
August 2, 1912 - December 19, 2016
It is with sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Norman Blair Keith, early on Monday morning, December 19, 2016. He was in the hospital, fighting pneumonia, and intended to be home with his family, for Christmas. Alas, but the years were catching up.
At 104 years young, he was bright, sharp, and full of life.
A man's man - a warrior.
Norman was born on a ranch in Saskatchewan, in 1912. He was a gifted athlete, playing hockey, and baseball, rising to play in the minor pros. At an early age he turned to boxing, and shortly after felt he needed a real job, so he joined the Bank of Montreal.
His career with the bank lasted 48 years, only to be interrupted by his joining the 12th Manitoba Dragoons during World War II. He was a dedicated and decorated military man rising to the rank of Major. He and his unit played a key role in the liberation of Holland. He was extremely proud of his men, his military association and heritage.
He also took great pride in his career with the Bank of Montreal. Various postings across Canada served to deepen his respect for the Bank, and foster an expansive network of friends, and co-workers, coast to coast.
Norman was one of the longest serving members of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Manitoba, and a lifetime member of the Ladner Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman to the very end. Often enjoying nature and the camaraderie, more than the actual sport. He had a wonderful appreciation for life's little moments - from the changing weather and seasons, to all that nature bestows. He loved the outdoors.
Norman married Norma Nicholson in 1939. Thirty-four years later in 1974, Norma passed away. She was the love of his life, and he never remarried.
He is survived, by his proud son Moray and his wife Pam, adoring Grandchildren Gregory - wife Jessica, and Courtney - husband Tyson Motz. Norman became a great grandfather to Bowen Blair Motz last summer. "The apple of his eye". He was so happy, and so very proud. Norman leaves behind many in-laws, nephews, nieces and members of the Clan Keith in Canada and Scotland.
Well read, a historian, he was the Patriarch of the Keith Family in Canada. Quick to recite family history, a nuance or a relationship, he enjoyed a "wee dram, and a good story". Norman was fiercely loyal to his family and friends, and will live on in everyone's heart as a charming, and remarkable man, that touched the lives of so many. If riches are friends, you would not find a wealthier man. His optimism was irrepressible - we all have been enriched by the time we spent with him, and are deeply saddened by his passing.
A Celebration of Life, for relatives and friends, will be held Friday, January 13, 2017 from 2 - 5 p.m., at Beach Grove Golf Course, Tsawwassen.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to
the Delta Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

To the greatest Keith I have ever met. I hope I can achieve half of what you did and affect as many people as you did in such a positive way. You will be remembered as long as I am alive to keep the endless amount of stories going.

Soldier, businessman and above all a gentleman in the finest meaning of the word. I consider myself so fortunate that Moray was able to bring Norm over to Victoria this past summer and join us for lunch at the Union Club, the highlight being sharing a sip or two of Glen Morangie ! Norm, an inspiration to us all. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Moray, Pam and the Keith family. Indeed an honour and privilege being friends for so many years.

Stormin Norman, to many of us who had the privilege of working with him. He promised a young Grade 12 student a job when she graduated from school and true to his word when she showed up at Main Office, Edmonton he gave her a job at University Br. much to the surprise of Dennis Anderson who really didn't need another teller at that time. The teller three years later she would become my life partner and the mother of our children.

Who else but Norm Keith would drive from Yellowknofe, NWT to Ft. Simpson, NWT in the dead of winter to see our new son?

That is the kind of man Norm Keith was. We will never forget him. We owe him so much.

I just spoke to him last year and while frail he reveled in the old stories.

The world is a better place because of Norm, the BMO will not likely see the likes of him again.

God bless you my friend, Rest In Peace

Norm was a true gentleman, a good friend, and a legend in the BMO Family. I will always remember the warm smile at our Saturday breakfasts with the boys and the passion in the stories he told. You will be missed, Norm.

Thinking of all the family as you celebrate the life of Norm Keith. We had the good fortune to spend time with him at Needa Lake during hunting season. Norm enjoyed hunting and was usually up before dawn and everyone else! He always claimed "I never miss a partridge" (well maybe one or two). Norm was fun, interesting and included us with the Keith family. The world needs more men like Norm Keith. Cheers to a remarkable man and a great Canadian!

To family of Norm Keith,

Norm was involved in the liberation of Holland including the city where I lived. I was born in Feb '45 , Norm and Co arrived shortly after. I then had the pleasure of being introduced to Norm as my first District Manger when I joined BMO in June 1966.

As Accountant at MO Edmonton years later I recall approving a cheque on his expense account for a brand New Plymouth Fury. The car buff tradition is alive and well in the Keith family.

Upon being transferred to Vancouver and retiring in 2002 I had to pleasure talking. To norm at every pensioners luncheon in clouding the one in December 2016.

All this to say I am a very fortunate person to have worked for and met this fine gentleman and proud Canadian. His picture with medals and all has been in my home office for many many years
Thanks Norm, you will rest in peace!

Norm was a close friend of my father, Victor Stilwell, until his death in 1975. They formed a strong bond in the 12th Manitoba Dragoons while overseas in France, Belgium and Holland. I reconnected with Norm 15 years ago and he was so very kind to me and shared many stories about my father. I continued visiting twice a year until last Spring. My condolences to the Keith family of whom he spoke of very proudly.
