Norman Serra Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 30, 2024.
Norman R. Serra, died on August 26, 2024, at the age of 99. He was born in Los Angeles on July 2, 1925 to Laura and Jack Serra. He was proud to be a descendant of the first Spanish settlers who arrived in New Mexico in 1599 (before the founding of Jamestown or the arrival of the Pilgrims).

Raised in South Los Angeles during the depression, he said it was a wonderful place and time to grow up, freedom from harm, lots of neighborhood children, learning to work at an early age with his first paper route at the age of 9, taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Columbkille Elementary school, and graduating from Mt. Carmel High School.

At age 18 he joined the Army Air Corps and completed training as a B29 Bombardier with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His fascination with the Norden bombsight and the Sperry autopilot led him to a career in engineering.

He met his beautiful Janet Sullivan at the UCLA Newman Club in 1947. They were married at St. Paul's Church in Westwood on May 26, 1951. She was the love of his life. They designed and built their family home in Pacific Palisades where they raised their five children.

His UCLA engineering degree led to a career in aircraft guidance and control. He joined Litton Guidance and Control Systems in1958 and was proud that the inertial navigation systems he helped design and build contributed to the defense of our country and to the delivery of millions of airline passengers to their destinations. He retired in 1990.

After retirement he had many activities, programming, carpentry, delivering meals on wheels, bread for the needy, and computer work at Catholic Charities, Corpus Christi Church and UCLA. His interests were his family, job, home, church, the family cabin in Yosemite, reading, tennis, skiing, music, inventing, traveling through the U.S., Europe and Asia, exchanging email with friends and relatives and in his final years, oil painting.

He was grateful for a long and happy life, for loving devoted parents, for a free college education on the GI Bill, for 60 years with his beautiful and wonderful wife, for his children and grandchildren who gave him great pleasure, for a wealth of family and friends, for a long and rewarding engineering career with colleagues he enjoyed and respected and for the opportunity to contribute in a small way to the community and to the country he loved.

His beloved Janet died of Alzheimers in 2011. He is survived by their children, Stephen, Maureen, Joan, Kenneth and Jack and grandchildren Michael, Annie, Stephanie and Ryan. In his later years he was blessed with the love and companionship of Linda Smith who brought him joy and happiness and to whom we are extremely grateful.

Bless God he didn't have to survive the fires. I did a search because I was wondering if he was ok. Loyal man. Best customer anyone could ask for. His plumber is passed as well and the business was overtaken by bad guys. My mother lost all as if in a fire. Think we will lose our home as well. God bless Norm. Good to see his photo... His voice was cute as his face.

Norm was my first Engineering Manager I worked for back in 1978 in the Instrument Engineering group. He was an excellent leader and was a mentor to me. I really enjoyed some of the stories he shared with me and other Litton retirees at Bobby's and Malibu Seafood retirement luncheons. He will certainly be missed!!

Norm Serra was my first manager I worked for at Litton G & CS in the Instrument Engineering group when I began working there in June of 1978. When I first interviewed with Norm he took an immediate interest in me because I had accumulated over 1500 hours as an actual USAF navigator on a C-141 airlifter by the time I left the Service. This was very fortuitous for me as the old-time method of navigation using celestial sightings, loran, radar and other radio navigation aids were rapidly being overtaken by this latest technology and the role of being a traditional navigator was rapidly becoming a dying breed. Norm felt my experience in the field of navigation was indeed an asset in making me well-rounded individual for which I have been forever thankful for Norm being a mentor to me during the 33 years I had worked there. I learned quite a lot under his supervision working with the G-300 gyroscopes and A-200 accelerometers used in the early LN-20 inertial systems. As I progressed through my own career working on other programs, I could also count on seeking Norm's help on several technical issues where he always found the time to provide advice to me. Even later when he retired from Litton, I also enjoyed his company when he shared stories when we had a group lunch at Bobby's Coffee Shop in Woodland Hills or later when we would meet with other Litton retirees for lunch at Malibu Seafood. It would not be an exaggeration that I felt Norm was responsible for shaping my career and my success at Litton G & CS!!

Norm was a classy man always going out of his way to help others. He was so kind, compassionate and friendly to everyone that had the privilege of meeting him.
Most of our family agrees he was the best male roll modal. He took such loving care of his wife once she was diagnosed with Alzheimer´s. Never once did he complain in those 13 years. He made the best of it. His wife wanted him to put on her pj´s. No questions asked he did it and could not wait to share with us the next morning at breakfast on a cruise ship. About 10 of us went on this cruise. He made it all sound absolutely hilarious. He had us all in stitches laughing. The memories we made were priceless. We will always have a place in our heart for you Uncle Norm.

So sorry for your loss of his bright and shining light. I always remember the fun and laughter we would have when our family, the Aiellos, would get together at the Serra's house. Norm was taller than our parents so he would tower over all of us. We would always have such a great time!! Yosemite and tennis were favorites of our family too. Sincerest condolences from Carolyn, Kathleen, Sheryl and Ken.

I work in the Corpus Christi Church office and I have known Norm for many years as a faith-filled and compassionate parishioner. I will especially miss the joyful ritual of receiving his Christmas card. Each year his card contained a wonderful message about his family and memories of the past. Via con Dios, Norm. Thank you for bringing light into our world.

Mr. Serra always looked out for us as a caring, generous neighbor dad. He led with humility and intelligence and helped us all feel safe and welcomed on Ocampo.

He was a wonderful, fun dad in a neighborhood of many great and fun dads. I will remember him as "The last Ocampo dad standing." RIP Mr. Serra!

I always enjoyed Norm for his positive, kind, and caring energy, his generosity of spirit, and how much downright fun he was when our families would gather at one of our homes or in Yosemite. I especially enjoyed our families gathering in Yosemite, where Norm's expansive spirit and smile seemed a complement to the expansiveness of the natural world around us. Those times constitute some of my favorite memories from my youth, and though I saw little of Norm after that time, I will miss knowing he's in the world, putting oils to canvas, and making the world a better place for all. Much love to Steve, Maureen, Joan, Ken, and Jack!

My fondest memory of grandpa, was when he first taught me how to use a computer, specifically the Apple Classic II, where he would sit me on his lap and help me navigate Math Rabbit, which wasrhe first ever computer program I'd ever used. That was also the first time he ever gave me a nickname, which was 'Miguelito'. I cherish this moment of him as one of the best to this day.
