"A meadowlark's sweet, flute note reminds me that yesterday's song never dies. That it is heard today, will echo still tomorrow...and like life itself, the river flows."
Norman's "song" will continue to flow throughout many tomorrows for those who love him..in their memories..their thoughts when they hear his name..and simply because he touched so many..as a teacher, mentor, leader and very devoted friend.
I felt great sadness, upon hearing of the loss of Norman, and wish to express my condolences to his family. You must be very proud of Norman, for he made a postive difference in so many people's lives.
He will be missed terribly by all who knew him.

Smalley Family & Friends = It is with sadness that I learn of your loss, and with great joy that I remember Norm and his terrific smile, the mischief of the twinkle in his eyes, and his true caring for others around him = both adults & teens! I met him at Independence.

To the family and friends of Mr. Smalley.
I was able to attend thunderbird for a short time while he was principal and I would come to the football games and when I would see him he would offer me a warm hello and a smile. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. May you know that God is always with you during this difficult time. Thank you Mr. Smalley for what you have done for me as well as the many other students lives you have touched.
RIP.
Sincerely,
Michael Curry

Dear Jean and girls,
I was so sorry to hear of Norman's passing. I taught with Norman at Greenway High School, back when he was the one with all the teaching experience (3 years) on a team with three of us in our first year. What a great mentor and friend he was! I loved that dark sense of humor and wicked laugh, but he was a great listener, too, and so committed to kids and giving them the best education possible. I remember how much he loved you, Jean, and how he beamed with pride when each of you girls were born.
I'm thinking of you all, and remembering and celebrating my friend Norman who made such a difference to so many of us.

I had the pleasure of working with Norman when he was an Assistant Principal at Independence and on several district-wide committees over the years. He was so gifted in so many ways, but I appreciated his sense of humor the most. His laugh was infectious and we will all miss him. Through his many years of dedicated service, Norman Smalley helped make Glendale Union the great district that it is.

Norman was a staff developer in GUHSD when I was a novice teacher; he inspired me by his knowledge, his love of literature, his wit, and his biting sarcasm! I hope his daughters know how many lives he truly touched. He was a gifted, talented man who will be missed by many of us.

Dear Jean, Nicole, Meredith, Katie,
You are all in our thoughts. We are so sorry to have heard of Norm's passing. The family favorite story of Norm was the morning leaving Lansing after Butch's funeral. Running late to the airport, Jon just had to take a few extra moments to dry his hair. As we all know Jon has been follically challenged for some time. Norm pointed out to Jon, "how long can it possibly take". Which made for a long ride to Detroit for all in the car and lots of yucks over the years.
I know he was very proud of you three girls and all you have accomplished. Norm will be missed.
Love to all,
Kurt, Dana and family

Dear Jean, Nicole, Meredith, and Kate, We can't tell you how saddened we are by Norman's death. We remember your wedding and the fun we had in Cheboygan. He was a good brother in law, husband and dad and brought lots of laughs to the family.(We didn't call him Norman Lunchbucket for nothing). He loved you all very much.He left this life way too early and I know you will miss him every day. With Sympathy and all our Love, Judy and Gerry

Mr. Smalley was an Assistant Principal during my early years of teaching at Independence High School. Not only was he a very supportive administrator, he had a great sense of humor! My favorite memory of Mr. Smalley is when he sang holiday carols (to which we rookie teachers had rewritten the words...) with the first-year teachers, for the entire faculty and staff - last minute, when we coaxed him to come forward and sing with us. This fond memory still brings a smile to my face! My sincere condolences to Mr. Smalley's family.

I attended THS while Mr.Smalley was principal. He was a very kind man that truly cared for his students. He always made us feel like each one of us was important individually. The future students of THS will greatly miss out on having such a dedicated principal. I want to send my condolences to the family of Norman Smalley.
In the words of Principal Smalley, "Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours."
You will be missed.

Norman Smalley was a champion for public education and students. He was also a very nice and friendly person with a good sense of humor. Education has lost a friend, but Mr. Smalley will always remain an inspiration.

So sorry to hear of your loss. My two children went through Thunderbird and I always enjoyed Mr. Smalley. He was kind and always there for the students. One Homecoming he even rode my daughter's horse on the field for the football opening. He didn't even know how to ride. What a great, brave man! He will be missed.
