Normand Labbe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2018.

Normand (Blackie) Labbe, 87, died peacefully on Monday surrounded by his loving family. Born at home on April 24, 1930 in Lewiston, Maine, the son of Conrad and Olivine Lapierre Labbe. He was called "Ti-Noire" from a very young age. He grew up in Lewiston and attended St. Peter's School until the 8th grade when he went to work fulltime alongside his father at L & C Cash Market on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. He delivered groceries prior to going to school in the morning with a horse and wagon. The grocery store moved to the corner of Park and Spruce Streets and then to Blake Street. He enjoyed setting up displays of fruit and produce which eventually led to fulfilling his long time dream of operating a fruit stand where he could sell the vegetables he grew on his farm in Minot. In 1986, he opened Blackie's Farm Fresh Produce on Minot Avenue in Auburn, and then on Sabattus Street in Lewiston. He loved interacting with customers whom he called "all his friends". He looked forward to going to work at "the stand" every day. He married the former Jacqueline Nadeau on July 21, 1952 in Lewiston. They moved to their farm in Minot where they raised their eight children and took in many kids needing a place to live. Needless to say, he put them all to work in the garden. Blackie and Jackie spent many winters in New Port Ritchey, Florida but by mid-March he couldn't wait to come home to go work in the hot house. He loved being on his tractors whether it was giving rides to his grandchildren, pulling his wagon loaded with boxes of tomatoes, corn, pumpkins and all the vegetables that he grew which gave him so much pride.Blackie loved being around people and always said he had a good life. He frequently said "he never worked a day in his life because if you're doing what you like, it's not work." He always told his employees that "the cheapest thing in the world is a smile."
He is survived by his spouse of 65 years, Jackie, 5 daughters, Claudette and Jim Tainter of Woolwich, Diane and Steve Jordan, Jeanne and Michael Carpenter, Sandra and Bruce Haley, Laurie Labbe all of Minot, and 3 sons, Conrad and Patricia Labbe, Normand (Frenchie) Labbe, Jr and Nikki LaBonne and Michael and Karen Labbe all of Minot. Grandchildren include Mike and Matt Tainter, Eric & Curt Jordan, Jeff and Jake Martin, Nick Labbe, Drew Gallant, Zach LaBonne, Mike Carpenter, Jackie Gotskowski, Cat Haley, Conrad and Hannah Labbe and several great grandchildren. One sister, Lorraine Foristal, Manchester, NH., brothers-in-law, Armand Cote of Lisbon and Norm (Pete) Garant of Lewiston, a cousin, Jackie Leclair, many nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Dan Cote, special friends Dr. Atollah Lataferti, Matt Manson, employees, former employees, many friends and business associates.
He was predeceased by his brother, Conrad (Ti- Blanc) Labbe, sisters, Laurette Poisson, Carmen Cote and Pauline Garant, brothers-in law John Foristal, Ovide Poisson and Normand Nadeau and a close cousin, Normand N. Labbe
The family wishes to thank all the care providers at St. Mary's Hospital, with special thanks to the staff at the Wound Center, the doctors and their staffs for the excellent care provided to Dad through the years.

My condolences to all the family. What a special man Blackie was. My maiden name is Martel. My father sold the store on the corner of Park and Spruce Streets to the Labbe family. It was then known as Martel Bros. My father's nickname was TiNoire and his brother was TiBlanc. I never realized that Blackie and his brother also shared those nicknames. Blackie and my father developed a strong relationship. My father stayed on as meat cutter at L&C Market.
I'm sure Blackie will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

What a GREAT man in many ways. I enjoyed seeing him at the stand. He would always look up see me in the mirror and stand to greet me. Always with a smile and always genuinely asking questions of myself or how family was doing. He used to meet me at the mailbox when I delivered papers. Again a GREAT MAN who will be sadly missed by many. The place won't be the same but hope it stays open. Prayers to the entire family.

A man who will be missed. Every time I'd see him at the stand he'd be asking for my Mother in Law, Juliette Bisson, how she was doing, and he'd never fail to tell me to say hi to "your beautiful wife." In recent years on Christmas Morning, I'd find an excuse to stop by on Minot Ave., pick up a squash or something, but the real reason was to see Blackie and wish him a Merry Christmas. He always manned the store on Christmas, maybe with a grandson or granddaughter, so all the other family and employees would be sure to have the day off, and so his many customers and friends could pick up what might be needed for that Christmas Dinner. Always thinking of others, that was "Farmer Labbe".

February 21, 2018

Hi, Blackie and I go way back,as I always considered him my Dad, I worked for him for about 7 years until I left for the Air Force. He took me in and helped me thru my late teen years, along with my duties I got to baby-sit the kids on the farm, I always had the use of the delivery truck to go on dates. I consider myself a very lucky/luckiest man to ever meet him, I never knew my father he stepped up to plate in flying colors and so did Jackie, those two thought me respect, and honesty, who knows where I would've ended up without their guidance and kindness.

Jackie, Helen called me to inform me of his passing I am so sorry I did not to get to see him more often, California is a long way from Lewiston. I wish I could be there for the funeral but I will remember him at daily mass. He was an amazing man a gift from God to all of us. May his soul rest in peace in heaven. To all the family I offer my deepest sympathy for your/our loss. Arthur Hastings Santa Rosa California GOD BLESS YOU ALL

My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Labbe family. Blackie was a great man. He was always helping people out. I remember he would try to find neighborhood kids on Blake St to either help sort the groceries when they came or help on deliveries. He knew that most of the kids didn't have a lot of of money so he put us to work either at the store on the farm. I will never forget what he did for me. God has gained another angel. Thank you Blackie.

Labbe Family,

I was saddened today, reading the story and obituary in The Sun Journal on Blackie's passing. Always upbeat, he made it a pleasure to shop for fruits and vegetables at the Minot Avenue stand.

I lived in NJ before moving to Maine, and I always brag to my friends there about the length of the strawberry season and the quality of the berries. Then I tell them how Blackie's brings in the strawberries from remote places in Maine and even Canada, where the season extends into August.

Just one of the many outstanding qualities of Blackie's produce.

Norman "Blackie" R. Labbe Sr., may he rest in peace.

The passing of Blackie Labbe is a loss to humanity because this man was a mentor to so many who have become winner's in life. Today we have lost a remarkable person whose life was full of guiding so many through their issues with his beliefs on how to treat others. We may never see another Blackie Labbe, and thank you for always being so kind to my parents and others !! Heaven has received in my opinion a true saint, and I send my condolences to Mrs Labbe and the rest of the family !! Thank You your grace to so many and it's now time to RIP Blackie God's Speed !!

I did not know Blackie personally, but often would see him and appreciate his friendly greeting in his store on Minot ave. His heart and outreach could be felt in his business. Many times I went to his vegetable to stand to feed people who could not afford food. The prices on his produce allowed for many people in the area who are barely surviving financially to continue to eat. For that I am most grateful. Blackie was a man who blessed the community he lived in. And yes, he will be greatly missed.
