Dennis Fortin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2010.
SPRINGVALE — Dennis Napoleon Fortin passed away at his home in Springvale on Jan. 13, 2010.

Dennis was born on September 28, 1949, to Prosper August Fortin and Lucienne Lillian Fortin, of Brunswick.

Dennis attended Assumption Prep School in Worcester, Massachusetts, on academic scholarship. He later attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the Students for a Democratic Society.

Dennis worked in the real estate and trucking industries, but he was a true jack-of-all-trades, with a remarkable ingenuity and knack for accomplishing specialized tasks for which he had no formal training. Carpentry and mechanics were favorite pastimes, and he devoted much of his time to maintaining and improving his home and other properties.

He had a strong interest in fostering and improving the Springvale community, and his projects included the historical restoration of two buildings on Main Street. He also served on the Sanford Zoning Board of Appeals and Solid Waste Task Force.

Dennis was an avid consumer of information and relished the opportunity to discuss issues and challenge the status quo. He had a strong interest in human rights and was an active donor to Amnesty International, CISPES Education Fund, Democracy for America, Doctors Without Borders, Food First, Maine People's Alliance, Mercy Corps, Mother Jones Foundation, Peace Action, Save the Children, and U.S. Fund for UNICEF. He also founded the Patricia E. Hasemann Foundation, which awards funds to help promote animal welfare.

Dennis was an outdoor enthusiast who particularly enjoyed running, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Many of his closest friends were running or cycling buddies. He was a founding member of the "Sweepers," a self-described "renegade cycling group" that enjoyed cycling, kayaking, and camping trips out West and in the Everglades.

Dennis is survived by two sisters, Prisca Tibbetts, of Sebago, and Joan Plummer, of Port Charlotte, Florida; one daughter, Nicole Marie Strangman, of Tewksbury, Massachusetts; one son, Mark Christopher Fortin, of Sanford; and 3 grandsons.

He is remembered as a loving and supportive father who tempered sage advice with self-deprecating humor. He was an exuberant and fun-loving grandfather, and his grandchildren adored him. He was generous and kind-hearted, the sort who would do something nice for you without being asked and without ever announcing the favor. His family and friends will all truly miss him.

A remembrance will be held in the spring.

Memorial donations in his name may be made to any of the charities mentioned above.

Dennis, was a very dear friend I met when just about 14 years old. He, George, Wally & I logged quite a few road miles running with the MVRR. After I moved away, I always would make sure to go visit him. RIP friend.

Dennis will be missed for his kindness, his loyality to his friends, his community minded compassion. I knew Dennis through a mutual friend of ours; Wally McDonald. I am deeply sorrowed by the news of his death. There is comfort in knowing he lived life well and did not hold back. My condolences and prayers go out to his family and many friends.

Dear Mark and Nicole . . . and Dennis' family,
My goodness but this news has saddened me greatly. I just saw your Dad, it seems, less than a month ago. He was a very good friend. What may not be known besides the fact that we ran together, biked together and shared many, many political and personal conversations, is the fact that I bought my first home in Springvale from him. One day when we were doing one of our "training" for a marathon runs (the muffin runs on Sat. morning from Grove St.) we passed this house on Kirk St. He mentioned he had just purchased it . . . well, I helped him finish refurbrishing it and rented it one year then purchased it from him after that...I lived there 14 years....and he plowed me out several times for nothing!!!!! And, on a more somber note, he and I were running the Nike marathon course going from Kennebunk into Biddeford Pool on the day when he stopped and said he had to "take a break" . . . he then went through a battery of tests that signified his need of assistance . . . He built a really nice lattice fence for me in his "make shift" workshop in the block he owned on Main St. - a masterpiece for the garden!! Well, as you can feel from my words, he was my friend - he was a friend to all of us. His study of the financial structure in Sanford and the spending ratios was used my me in the negotiations for salaries for teachers in Sanford. He was a very smart man. So, thank you, Dennis, for all the friendship and commradery - thank you. I wish you all well and in remembering your Dad - there should be a wonderful smile and a good feeling of warmth sent from his friends - I am but one of so many.
Very sincerely,
David Breault
