Thomas Bowers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 24 to Jan. 26, 2011.
Thomas James Bowers, 67, died suddenly at his home on January 21. Tom was predeceased by his mother, Mary and his father, Harry, and maternal grandparents Michael and Katherine who he joins in heaven. He is survived by his loving wife, June (Mead) and daughter Katherine (Katie); two sons, Peter and Sean; daughter-in-law, Rebecca (Becky); two wonderful grandchildren who he adored, Nathan and Gavin; his sister, Patricia (Charles) Mulesky; his brother John (Ida) Bowers; his brother-in-law, Lars Mead; nephews Robert (Erin) Mulesky and Michael (Beatriz) Mulesky, John David Bowers; niece Susan (William) Knight; as well as his cousins and many friends. Tom was a life-long learner—he loved going to school, challenging himself and others to realize their fullest potential. He holds a bachelors degree in political science from the State University of New York at Binghamton, 1970; MA in counseling from Binghamton University, 1992; MS in information resource management from Syracuse University, 2002; and MSW from Binghamton University's School of Social Work, 2006. He had long and successful careers in systems engineering at IBM, Endicott and Lockheed Martin, Owego, retiring from both these corporations to pursue his passion—helping others—by becoming a gifted social worker with tremendous humility. Tom served the vulnerable and suffering souls of our community as a volunteer, intern, chemical dependency counselor and clinical social worker at the Addictions Center of Broome County; Binghamton General Hospital; Chit Chat Farms, Caron Foundation; Foster Care Mentoring Program, Broome County Dept of Social Services; Southern Tier Independence Center; Chenango County Mental Hygiene Services; United Health Services Methadone Clinic; New Horizons and United Health Services Mental Health. He was vice-president of Halley Research, LLC. Tom co-founded the Healthy Heart Program at Lourdes Wellness Center. He was a Peer Counselor, Employee Assistance Program, IBM Corporation, Endicott; Councilman, Town of Dickinson; and Chairman, Zoning Board of Appeals, Village of Port Dickinson. He found tremendous satisfaction as a guest speaker for the MSW program at Binghamton University and the University of Buffalo. Tom was always proud of his military service in the U.S. Navy Reserves and U.S. Army. He loved nature, his Irish heritage and the color green. He was a self-described, long-suffering fan of the Mets, Jets and NY Giants. A celebration of Tom's life will be held Wednesday, January 26 at 11:00 a.m., at the Owego United Methodist Church, 261 Main Street, Owego. All are invited to come, to spend time with others who loved him and to share a story about Tom—how he helped you, how he made you laugh, how he touched your life and the lives of those you love. Tom carried a card in his wallet and directed us to share this with you:

I give you this one thought to keep

I am with you still - I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone

I am with you still - in each new dawn.

~Native American Prayer~

I had the pleasure of working with Tom at New Horizons. We often joked about going out for ice-cream and taking a trip to Ireland. Tom was a gift to so many, especially his patients he cared for. Thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends.

Dear June,
I was saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I am glad you have your brother there with you and your dear Katie. I remember Tom from so long ago when Rich and I were students at SUNY-B and I minded Katie once in awhile. What a lovely man Tom was, and I'm sure his loss will be felt keenly by all. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

To The Bowers Family,
Please accept my sincere sympathies. I met Tom many years ago thru Pete Bednar who was good at setting people up against each other and then 'enjoying the show'. Tom and I immediately disliked each other...We met again, only this time,we were both on to Pete & actually became friends...All the guys, Tom, Pete and Frank Cunningham all were at our house and Tom was so impressed with all of my husband's computer room, they spent hours talking. It is so sad that all 3 of these fine gentlemen are gone, but if there is this place called heaven, may they all go out to dinner and enjoy them selves.
What was lost can never be replaced and I am very sad to lose 3 good friends....God Bless us ALL.

To June, Katie, Peter, Sean: Even though we are down in Virginia, I get on pressconnects almost every day. I was so shocked to see the passing of Tom. He was a great and caring person. Our prayers are with you all. I know it is a hard time for all of you now, but God just got a very special angel.

January 26, 2011

I cannot believe our dear friend went from us so quickly. I was thinking of Tom in the last few days and was shocked to hear of his death. I already miss his laughter and way of not taking life too seriously.
I see that some of our friends from B.U. have already signed this guest book. Tom made our days at class quite memorable. He always had a ready story of his latest adventures.
I look forward to the day when we meet again, so that he can tell us all about his adventures in Heaven.
My sincere condolences to the beloved family of a wonderful man.

My sincerest condolences to Tom's family and friends. I have known Tom my entire life. My earliest memories were of Tom, John and many of my other cousin's at Aunt Mary's house. Tom was always the most fun and most likely to keep us all laughing. He had a certain twinkle in his eye and impish streak that endured throughout his life, an enviable quality in a serious world. Although it seemed I only saw him at weddings and recently funerals, he will be truly missed.

Good bye Tommy.....

To the family and friends of Tom - I feel blessed to have known Tom during our time in the MSW program and more recently at a Social Work training in the community where we were role play partners. I will remember the positive, caring, humorous, and humble way about him that will surely live on through all those he touched. May God bless you all during this time.

I don't know what to say about Tom Bowers. He helped me tremendously. I seriously can't believe he's passed on. Tom was my counselor when I was just starting out in recovery. Later I became his co-worker, and eventually we grew to become friends. He was so encouraging, gentle, and trustworthy. Tom Bowers truly changed my life. I believe he is one of God's angels. I'd like to think that his job description just recently changed. He lives on in our hearts.

I have had the honor of witnessing Tom doing what I consider God's work. When Tom was working with someone he was as invested in their recovery, and healing as if it were his own. I will remember him as a humble man who followed his instincts, and saw through the superfluous to get to the heart of what was most important. My sincerest condolences to his family.
