Oaks, Carol Joan (Bagley)

WATKINS GLEN: 84, died at home in Watkins Glen, NY, December 13, 2012. Joan was born to Roger and Genevieve (Brooks) Bagley in Batavia, NY in 1928. After attending college in NYC she worked as a medical secretary before starting her family. Joan was a volunteer for Southern Tier Hospice as well as the Watkins Glen Library and Schuyler Hospital. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader, generous to any charitable organization that sent her a request for donations, an avid reader, notoriously camera shy and a willing sailing partner even though she never learned how to swim. She was a dog lover, a General Hospital fan, and her cookie jar was never empty. She was passionate about politics and even took part in a march for peace in Washington, DC in the '60s. She is survived by her sons Douglass Oaks and his wife Darienne of Shelburne, VT, Mark Oaks and his wife Carolyn of Fabius, NY, Jonathan Oaks and his wife Penny of Marietta, NY, her daughter-in-law Lisa Oaks of Horseheads, NY and her daughter Ellen (Oaks) Peterson and her husband Edward of Horseheads, NY. Grandchildren Linsley Oaks, William Oaks, Sara Oaks, Katherine (Oaks) Shaw and her husband Patrick, Abigail Oaks, Allyson Oaks, Elizabeth Peterson, Perry Peterson and Nathaniel Peterson. Great-grandchildren Harper and Lennon Shaw. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years William "Bill" Oaks, her son Michael "Tod" Oaks, and her sister Mary Claire (Bagley) Chase. A memorial service and committal at Lakeview Cemetery will be held at the family's convenience. Donations may be made in her name to Care First (formerly Southern Tier Hospice) 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830, or to The Watkins Glen Public Library, 610 South Decatur Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891.You may express condolences to the family or "Light a Candle" in her memory online in "Obituaries" at www.Royce-Chedzoy.com.

Doug, Mark, Jon & Ellen:
So sorry to learn of your Mom's passing. I remember her as such a sweet & gentle person back in the days when our families would gather either at Seneca Lake or in Tully. May God comfort you in your sadness as you recall a loving Mother to you and friend to so many. God Bless, Steve Healy

Dear Ellen,

I am very sorry to read of the death of your mother. I think she would certainly have been a good friend to have. But you must know the old story of the apple falling from the tree. Hold your memories of her tight they get more important as the years pass.

Dear Ellen, Eddie, Perry and Nate,
So very sorry to hear of your loss. It appears she was a wonderful woman, and one I wish I'd had the pleasure of meeting. If she was anything like you Ellen, then she will definitely leave a lasting impression on those who knew her, and a large void to fill.
May your memories bring you comfort, strength and peace in the days ahead.
With deepest sympathies from the Linchuck family
